Clarification: ALL seasons included.
Contrary to some confused reviewers, all six seasons will be included in this collection. Since the newest season is not yet complete, they can not list a synopsis in the product description. That being said, Lost is the most original and creative television series of all time, and I’m sure this collection will be bursting with easter eggs and plenty of behind the scenes info for die hard fans. I love Lost!!

The Finale and Its Impact on this Show
A lot of people are going to debate back and forth about this finale, the final year and whether or not it turns this elaborate performance piece into a show worth it’s place in the history of great storytelling or a complete waste of time. Were enough questions answered? Did we find out everything we need to know? Why was Walt so important? Where did the Dharma pallets keep coming from? Who was Libbie’s husband and how did he die? Why was she in the mental institution?
Who cares?
Although the mysteries were tantalizing, Lost wasn’t merely a show about devises and red herrings. It was about people. The Variables. How they affect us and how they change everything that we thought our life should be. It was about destiny and free will and how the two are not exclusive. It’s about how a world is only worth saving if there is love within it. Though the story is told through Jack Shephard’s rise, fall and redemption, it is truly a tale of community. And it is only with that community that we are really able to transcend ourselves too an enlightenment none of us could ever know alone. It is only with each other that Jack and Locke become one full man. With each other Sawyer and Juliet are able to lower their armor. Hurley and Ben protect the island. Claire and Kate raise Aaron.
The characters and their enlightenment was the focus of the writers, actors and all involved. That is what made Lost great. That is what made the mysteries so compelling. And that Is why i will often revisit this show. It was a gift.

Best Six years of my life!!!
LOST has been an amazing ride. Never has a show sucked me in quite like Lost. From the opening episode I knew I was hooked and I never looked back. It has the best writers on the planet and they constantly keep you on your toes as you fall in love with this strange world. I can’t even start to explain the amount of depth that this show is made up of. Every episode is important as it adds something new to the mythos of the series and to the characters themselves. At its core Lost is all about it’s characters. Seldom does the plot get more spotlight then the characters themselves. This leads to some amazing characters that feel like real life human beings instead of fictional creations. They are all given a fair share of the spotlight through flashbacks that tell their story before the island.

Lost was never a show afraid to take risks. None of the characters were ever safe and Lost took no prisoners as main cast members meet the grave with some regularity throughout the series. It also never became stale as the actual narration theme changed every season which kept the series fresh and new every week. I won’t elaborate on how the theme changed, but let’s just say that every season had a unique focus. The actors all should recieve alot of praise as there is never a moment where they fail to utterly shock you with their brillance. After all the writting would be nothing without great actors to bring these characters to life, and bring them to life they did.

LOST was not always perfect though. No series is as season five was a rare point where the characters were thrust into the background as the plot itself set the pace. Lost was always best when it told its story through it’s characters. The rest of the series is amazing though. Even season five where it is disappointing it still finds ways to impress you with some stellar episodes mixed in.

Lost constantly referanced previous episodes, which I loved. You felt really rewarded for seeing a connection that your family or friends didn’t recognize. Also there are alot of literary refereances throughout the series along with philosophy, mythology and history. It really has a deep framework that it built its story on.

The main arguement to the series is the most interesting part of the show. The old science vs religion is a major theme to the series. The main character Jack is a man of science. While another character Locke is a man of faith that believes everything happens for a reason. Seeing these two men argue both points throughout the series is always top notch entertainment. All of the characters evolve greatly from the person they were in the pilot to who they are in the end, but these two have the greatest arcs as both men change to understand eachothers point in different ways.

Now without giving anything away the series finale was brillant. Never has a finale finished off a series so perfectly. Yes some of the answers are left to ponder, but that is one thing that makes Lost great. You have to use your brain in order to figure out some of the lesser mysteries, but I assure you there are clues to be found to figure them out. We simply haven’t noticed them yet. Lost is a series that has a lot of replay value as you constantly catch pieces of the puzzle that you missed before, and with plots and characters this detailed you won’t mind rewatching the series for decades to come.

If you’ve never seen the series or are just buying it to relive the greatest series of all time I highly recommend the series to fans of serialized dramas. I envy all of you new comers to Lost as you are at the beginning of the adventure. I wish I could relive it for the first time again as it is sorely missed in my life. For the rest of us that have taken the journey already we have to use this set to remember and to let go.

Like the Oppo blu ray player. Love how it saves my place when I turn off the player before finishing the dvd. Versatile and reliable. A product that is will age well.

Oppo BDP-83

It’s hard to believe that any product could be as good as the nearly unanimous rave reviews on Amazon, but that has been my experience with this player. Video quality is outstanding, and the upscale performance on DVDs is so good that I can discern little difference between them and Blu-ray discs. Tech support is outstanding. When I emailed customer service with a playback issue on a BD, I received a response within minutes including a link to a firmware upgrade that resolved the problem. Expensive machine, but worth it for the excellent performance, build quality, and tech support.

Very Good Blu-ray Player

This DVD Blu-ray player is just Great. Works just as I had Expected it to. Plays about every disk that i have put into the player. I am very pleased with the player, If you are looking for a dvd blu-ray player that is top of the line and plays about all the disk, this is it. The video quality is the Best Out there….

Best purchase ever

I had never heard of this company before researching Blu-ray players and after giving them a try, I couldn’t have been happier. From the moment I opened the box to the first movie I watched with it, I was in a constant state of awe. The packaging is spectacular — it reeks of “high-end”. They included audio and video calibration Blu-ray disks which was a welcome surprise and the end result is unbelievable.

When I made the jump to HD I was assuming my DVD library was going to become obsolete. Again, I was surprised to see the quality of this player upscale the pictures. I’m an anchor-bay fan now because the DVD’s look fantastic — it’s still no Blu-ray but I don’t mind watching them at all.

If I had to make one gripe, I do miss the “instant replay” feature of my prior DVD players. This was a button on the remote that let you jump back 10 or so seconds to replay the line you just missed. It’s missing on this player so I have to deal with the rewind/play buttons but that’s a pretty easy problem to live with.

OPPO is the Yardstick

I did quite a bit of research on Blu-ray players before I purchased the OPPO BDP-83. I found that regardless of what product review you’re reading or whether it is written by a professional reviewer or someone who owns the product, Blu-ray players are almost invariably compared to the OPPO. The review will say that it doesn’t load as fast as the OPPO, that it isn’t quite as clear as the OPPO when the camera is panning, or that the picture is as good as the OPPO. I decided that if the OPPO is the standard of comparison for both reviewers and users, then I should buy it. So I did.

The OPPO comes with a nifty carrying bag and a HDMI cable. Most players don’t come with either. I don’t know why you’d want to carry a Blu-ray player around with you, but if you do they give you a nice means to do it. The realy remarkable thing about the instructions, and a lot of people will appreciate this, is that they were clearly written by a native English speaker. The instructions are clear, concise, and comprehensive. I’ve never ever seen their equal.

The first thing the OPPO instructions tell you to do is connect it to the Internet and upload the latest firmware. It’s easy to do, even for a dinosaur like me. Once that’s done the unit is ready for installation in your theater system. It’s no more difficult to do that than to hook up a DVD player, but you may need some additional cabling depending upon the state of the art of the system involved. The setup of the OPPO is menu driven and user friendly, and you won’t be guessing on setup options because the instructions describe each option very well. Recommend you jot down your setup selections for future reference.

In using the OPPO my wife and I have noticed that it will display visual information on conventional DVDs that a high quality DVD player (my OPPO replaced a Denon DVD player) cannot display. You won’t necessarily be inspired to replace all of your DVDs with Blu-ray disks because the OPPO will make them play better than ever before. It kind of gives your DVDs a new lease on life! The first Blu-ray disk we watched on the OPPO was the movie Avatar. We’d watched the DVD on the Denon, so we thought we knew what to expect. Oh it’s the same movie, but you WILL notice (and enjoy!) the difference. I have long thought that the real benefit of the digital revolution was in the sound. I still think that’s true, especially with a high-end subwoofer, but now the revolution is as much visual as sonic.

Unless you hook your new OPPO up to a tube TV set you will not be disappointed.

It’s everything I hoped it would be…bravo OPPO!

A superb product. If you read my review of the OPPO-BDP80 (which I bought and returned after using it for a couple of weeks) you know how highly I praised that unit. My only complaint with the BDP80 was its inability to adjust the picture on Java-enabled Blu-ray disks. After contacting OPPO I was assured that the more sophisticated circuitry in the BDP83 could do what the 80 could not. That is indeed correct: Widescreen Blu-rays can be zoomed to eliminate black bars top and bottom by this unit without distorting the aspect ratio. Yes! As soon as I attached the CAT-5 cable it connected itself to the net and upgraded its firmware. So now it has moveable subtitle capability as well. With that out of the way, on to performance. I don’t think I’m imagining this, but the audio on the BDP83 is a little better than that on the BDP80. Classical SACDs (I’m thinking of the Sibelius 2nd Symphony on Telarc) sounded a bit dry and clinical on the 80, warmer and fuller on the 83. Both my wife and I noticed the improvement–not a lot of difference, but noticeable. No problem playing burned as opposed to commercial disks. On the rare occasion HDMI recognition causes a tiny delay in communication between the OPPO and my Onkyo AV; so the first second or two of the music is cut off. I think that’s just a limitation with HDMI. Not a big deal; just set it back to the beginning and it plays fine. Both the 80 and the 83 deliver a full, powerful soundstage with SACDs as well as surround AV sources. Note that it doesn’t automatically switch from stereo to surround, but the Audio button on the remote tells you every available option that is compatible with whatever AV unit it feeds. The higher-end upscaling in the BDP83 gives a noticeably cleaner picture from DVDs than anything else we’ve owned, from the BDP80 down to a super-bargain but quite decent Desay upscaling DVD player. For example, on the 83 the white lettering of the opening credits on DVDs of Showtime’s “The Tudors” is now much more sharply outlined against the dark background, and this goes for every DVD we’ve played–less fuzziness at the borders. Meanwhile, BDs (Star Trek 2009, Mariinsky Theater Firebird Ballet) are spectacular. Loading takes just a few seconds and the thing is SILENT thereafter! Movement is sharp and clear without a trace of blurring. I love this unit.

Superb, but some glitches

Had this product since October of last year. Compared it directly to the Pioneer BDP-320. Would not normally review, but buyers need to know about one thing I wish I knew prior to buying it.

Good: BDP-83 produces the most color accurate, film like picture of any blu-ray player I’ve seen, partly due to the lack of external processing that the player produces on the image. Some players at 1080p/24fps will produce a slightly “hot” or “contrasty” image to generate visual pop. BDP 83 avoids this. If you are looking for “HD pop,” which is not really the nature of film, I would actually suggest the BDP-320, which produces an image of this type extraordinarily well through some processing. BDP-83 is more for creating a more film-like (no other way to describe it; it looks like film) viewing experience, particularly when in dark rooms (definitely recommended for this environment.)

Not Good: For months, my player was producing unnatural judder and flickering in slow panning images. It was NOT my television as I had compared the PQ with another player that did not exhibit any issues. These problems were not things I could immediately detect but absolutely confirmed when comparing it to another player (which infuriated me as I did not pay $500 dollars for a player to not play back blu-rays correctly). After MONTHS of not knowing why, I determined that installing firmware updates through USB was causing the issues, no matter which firmware I used. As soon as I burnt the firmware to a DVD and installed it that way, the player no longer produced any visual artifcats like stepping or stuttering. Just be aware that the player, while unparalleled when it works as it should, is not immune from bizarre and distracting glitches that may piss you off.

The best blu ray at the right price

This Oppo player has been reviewed thousands of times and is the best player for the price. It has great picture quality but better than that it has great audio quality that blows away my old Sony player.

Fantastic player!

Echoing all of the other reviews… Play back of Blue-ray disks is impeccable. Upconversion of DVDs is top notch. Very fast response. Love the fact that it is made by an American company. I wquld buy this again in a heart beat!

Customer Reviews

Great BR Player for the Price

We bought this Blu-ray player for two basic reasons: 1) To have Blu-ray capability, and 2) Because it allows access to Netflix Instant Movies. We are still using a Mitsubishi 55″ TV that is several years old, so I can’t rate the LG’s ability to render HD video. However, the standard video rendition is excellent so I have no reason to believe that the HD rendition wouldn’t be, too. I should also note that, because of our older TV, we are using the component video connections rather than the HDMI. I’m looking forward to updating the TV to an HD set soon, and I’m sure we’ll notice an improvement.

The Netflix connection was easy to set up, and once it’s set access is just a button push away. I followed LG’s advice and connected the player to our LAN with a wired Ethernet connection rather than a wireless one and we’ve never had a problem with streaming movies. In addition to Netflix, the BD 370 allows access to your own home movies/videos, photo and music collections, Cinema Now (with subscription) and YouTube via an Ethernet connection. I have viewed YouTube videos with the BD 370 and they play well.

Bottom line: This is a great Blu-ray player for $150.

Everything I hoped for

I purchased this Bluray player in March, and have loved every minute of watching programs on it. I have an older HDTV (rear-projection LCD Sony), and this LG is hooked up via Component Cables, since my TV doesn’t have HDMI inputs. The quality of Bluray discs is fantastic. We also watch a TON of Netflix on it, and when we get “HD quality” from the service, it is very good.

I gave the remote 4 out of 5 stars maybe because it took me a few uses to really figure it out. I’m not sure if that’s because this is my first Bluray player or the design from LG.

The bottem line on this product is that it has exceded my expectations. If you’ve seen a Bluray demo at any store, you know how good these can be. Even with my component hook-up, the quality blows away DVD. And we use the Netflix streaming feature far more than I expected we would (I just looked it up, and we have watched 87 movies or TV episodes on this player since March 3rd).

I would highly recomend this product to those looking for a Bluray player

Good Blu-Ray Player

I picked this Blu-ray player up on Black Friday for a Christmas present for my parents. They have not used any of the special functions yet. (Netflix, Youtube, etc.) But it is a fantastic Blu-Ray player. They have not had a single problem with it so far. It also upconverts DVDs very nicely.

No more cable TV!

I love streaming Netflix right to my TV through this DVD player! Of course the Blu-Ray discs look great, too, but I ditched my cable TV package since I can get more than enough movies & other entrtainment from Netflix.

Nice enough player but please read

This is a great player. I have no complaints with it. I am writing this review only to clarify a point. I searched everywhere as to how the BD370 is different from BD390 and everywhere i read the same thing. That the only difference is that the 390 supports wireless networking. That is not entirely true. There is another big difference – The BD370 is NOT DLNA compliant. This is something that no one mentioned anywhere on the internet.

Since the 370 is not DLNA compliant, it does NOT support PC connectivity or things like Playon / Tversity. I am giving it 4 stars because it lacks PC connectivity and Pandora.

On the other hand the 390 is fully compliant. It has everything the 370 has plus it can stream media from the shared folders on your networked PC.

Mid-Price Combo of costs, features, ease, reliability … so far

Since this page already has so many consumer comments, I delayed adding my own two cents into the heady mix. Most of the upsides of this model from LG have already been listed: very good video performance (though not utterly perfect in all possible respects); outstanding audio; good networking capacity with a variety of sites (including my own fav, netflix, for streaming media). I accept the comments which seem to indicate that some consumers got lemons from LG. This player is my first experience with LG electronics, and so far I am very favorably impressed. My unit has clean/minimal good looks. The remote allows me to get around, using the main features. Setup/menus/GUI are cleanly laid out and make sense. Loading HD times for this unit are outstanding, compared to earlier models from just about everybody; but then, most players have improved their HD access/play times. I am connecting the player to my big rig home theater set up – just five channels plus subwoofer, and I like how easily I was able to hook the sound up. I also like having the HDMI cable carry both video/audio to my HDTV, so that I don’t always have to bother neighbors in my apt bldg by using the HT rig when just the HDTV sound will do. I chose this model based on mid-level combinations of features (added networking) plus entry-level pricing. I like HDTV especially for movies in all genres; but I am not on such an unlimited budget that price is not considered, too. I purchased the unit in November, 2009, and it has been solid in the intervening six months. Very easy to set up/install/connect, too.

Customer Reviews

Panasonic Bluray disc player

I purchased this late last year and at the time, Panasonic were promising upgrades for the Vieracast. Much to my disappointment, they did not add Netflix capabilities on the 2009 models but did on the 2010. Panasonic, shame on you. If you would have been more upfront with the public, I would have waited a few months.

Blu-Ray Panasonic Rebuilt Unit

I ordered the rebuilt unit due to the extreme savings… and with my experience of buying rebuilt products they are just as good as buying a new product. So I see the overall satisfaction is the savings in Dollars and getting a quality product.

Good, but slow

This player is good, but is a little slow. It takes about 10 seconds to turn on, 10 seconds to open the draw, put in a DVD and close the draw and about 10 seconds to turn off. The remote is OK, but the skip button is a little to close to the slow search button. For some reason it never turns captions on, and there is no button on the remote to turn captions on in the middle of the movie, so that is a pain if you watch a lot of foreign films.

Great Blu Ray Player

Product was delievered brand new as advertised. Perfect condition when arrived. Worked immediately after installation. Cheaper than in the stores.

Great Blu-Ray

This product is great – was easy to install and easy to use. The remote has easy to read buttons that are very user friendly. Panasonic again has not let me down. Thanks.

BLUE RAY MANIA

Works, good match for my viera P54v10 , Only watched one blue ray so far, to early to comment more. Nice price at amazon.com. Matched my black components also. OH dont’t let blogs turn you off when say slow to load, most players load slower in this price range. Would not hesitate to buy again for a gift. Later….

great deal

Worked as billed. i have used mostly for netflix streaming which ahs been great. Also watching regular bluray and that works fine too

Needs a better remote

Purchased this model on Friday afternoon May 28th 2010. Brought it home and set it up. Connections to online Apps was flawless – very easy to link with my Linksys router. What triggered me to send it back is the Remote control. It takes forever to communicate with the player. The final straw was the remote would not communicate with the player to eject a disc even with fresh batteries. I had to go to the manual and find the section on Troubleshooting – funny how they show you pictures on disc removal. Have heard good things about the company. A BIG box warehouse club even promotes their products. Looking for another brand and will spend more for quality.

Perfect picture and sound. Better than my Sony Playstation.

Not only does it play blu-rays perfect, but it also upgrades non blu-rays better than my Playstation does. I love this Vizio.

No Regrets

Picked this up at BJs on an impulse buy. Setup was ~ 5 minutes, online and streaming VUDU that day.

One little undocumented feature, it can play DivX movies off of USB thumb drives.

I need to go get another quickly!

Nice player at a nice price.

I like it. The Vizio VBR200w does a great job streaming netflix, and in HD, at that. It is much faster than my 1st gen Sony in both boot time and time to play BD. However, now that we’ve found all the amazing content on Netflix, we’ve barely used the optical disk. Sometimes I have to turn off the unit and reboot to reconnect to wifi, and if I turn off the unit with my TV still on, it locks up the TV (In all fairness, this may be an HDMI compatibility issue – my TV is a dinosaur, one of the 1st 1080p Westinghouse monitors.)

But hey, the thing works well, and I really like it!

Great Buy

I have shopped around for 6 months before deciding on Vizio products. I recently purchased a Vizio LCD TV with sound bar and the blu-ray player was almost a no brainer. The price is right, it performs perfectly and the internet apps were so easy to set up with the wireless system. It took almost no time to start streaming Pandora and to watch Netflix. I have no problem with the remote and find it easy to use as well. This was definitely a good purchase.

Customer Reviews

Almost what I was looking for…

As my first Blue-ray player I liked it, but it didn’t fit what I was looking for.

I was looking forward to the applications and potential of them as well.

Pros: For the most part, the player is great with some minor details that I didn’t like.

Cons: Some updates wiped out any saved application settings. Causing me to re-register everything. Slow processing speed when accessing INTERNET and applications.

The cons are minor, but were apparent to me.

The only issue I had when connecting (wifi) to the internet the first time was that it was unsuccessful. I made sure that everything was correct, but after I restarted the player the connection worked fine.

I would recommend this product, as it does a great job as a blue-ray player and I was impressed with the NetFlix quality of play back.

Amazing first Blu Ray

This is my first Blu-ray player. I purchased my first HD tv about a year ago, also a Samsung, and have been looking out for a player that I felt would give me the most bang for my buck & more importantly would allow streaming movies. When I found this Samsung I was amazed at how much it offered. Built in wireless connection, Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, Pandora, Vudu & more. When I got it home I plugged it in & connected it with an HDMI cable, very simple. Set up was extremely easy. It takes you step by step & found my wireless internet connection easily. I entered my password & it now automatically connects every time I turn on the player. One bonus is that since my tv & the player are both Samsung they sync up & the remote worked for both my player & tv with no setup needed. You can set up the remote to work for any brand of tv though & the manual contains the codes needed. Setting up Netflix, Blockbuster & Vudu were easy and required little time. I’ve watched movies with Netflix & Vudu & had no problems. Quality was great on both with no interruptions. Blu-ray discs play with great quality. I’ve never owned a Blu-ray player before so I can’t comment on how load time compares but I didn’t think it was too long. Not much difference from other DVD players I have owned in the past. I also played a regular DVD & found the quality to be great. There are other free internet apps like Twitter, YouTube (I was able to play videos flawlessly), Accuweather, USA Today and various games. I have read that additional apps will be added in the future, hopefully that is true. The only thing that would make this player perfect was if they added Amazon Video on Demand & Facebook! I’ve also received updates that the player notified me of when I first set up it up & they downloaded quickly & with no problems with the wireless connection. There is a USB connection in the front. I plugged in my flash drive & was able to use it with no issues, very simple! The only thing I haven’t attempted yet is the All Share option to sync to your home computer. Overall, I am extremely happy!

What a value

I’ve had this Blu-Ray player for a few weeks now and couldn’t be happier. Setup out of the box was a snap, replacing the DVD upconverter we were previously using. Samsung picture quality is outstanding! Wireless network connection synched right away for firmware update and we were off and running in a matter of minutes. Load time is quick for a Blu – no issues yet, and DVD upconversion is up to par. Streaming NetFlix and Pandora are really fantastic and easy to use. They need to work on the remote though – a bit cumbersome.
We’re very happy we purchased this unit and would recommend to a friend.

Solid and works as stated

This is my first blu-ray player. When looking I was a bit biased towards Samsung because I have a Samsung LCD TV. The idea of one remote running multiple devices was appealing. The brand wasn’t the deciding factor, though. I have quite a few family movies on a home file server that I wanted to be able to watch, and I wanted Netflix and Pandora streaming. This device advertised them all, so I took the chance. For what it’s worth – I would have liked Hulu too. Hopefully that’ll come soon.

Before this device I was using an XBox + PlayOn media server. The device worked alright for the purpose, but I was having quite a few issues with XBox hardware, so it got retired in lieu of the 6500. Maybe my expectations were product of my XBox experience, but I was really impressed with the ease of setup with Netflix and Pandora. Movies play well, and it was rather easy (though the interface was not super-intuitive) to connect to my file server. I was also impressed that I was able to use either folder browsing, or go through the PlayOn server to select a movie off the file server. And, because of the XBox, I had Cat6 cable running to my living room – so I’m connecting via the cable and not WiFi. I attribute this to the speed of accessing media over the network.

Everything works just fine. Picture quality is excellent. And the product works as advertised.

Everything I wanted and more

Wow, this is a great device. I bought this to supplement my PS3 which had been my previous bluray/netflix workhorse.

Aesthetically, this is very slim and not deep. It is as wide as my sony receiver. It has a very attractive finish. There are no buttons but rather backlit regions on the front panel that you press. I hooked it up to my 5 port hdmi switch (also purchased from amazon) and connected to my receiver via the optical port. Setup was did not require much user intervention, just language and video format. I hooked it up to my router via an ethernet cable. It downloaded new software which didn’t take long at all.

I mainly bought this for netflix and was lured by the youtube and pandora. This thing can also access Blockbuster and Vudu. It seems that with the updatable software we could see more functionality in the future.

I’m 100% satisfied with my purchase.

Potential improvements:
1. Better tactile feedback for the navigation keys (up down left right).
2. Now this would be killer, built in hard drive for music and movies. This thing would totally kill the appletv (which i also own). Now this player can hook up to your dlna devices and multimedia files from your computer which might make this a moot point. I haven’t tried it yet but will soon.

Customer Reviews

Almost perfect…

What was Sony thinking when they priced this player at $700?? Now that you can get it for $200 it’s a true contender. Build quality & appearance are excellent in this player, as are the picture & sound quality. It would have been perfect for me except for some minor complaints:
* No Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, etc. This machine does have built-in wi-fi but doesn’t have a browser to access these internet-based services. Too bad, too–it was the main reason I bought a ‘network’ Blu-ray player.
* Very slow to initialize & load.
* Several brief blank spots during movie play. Similar to the brief hiccup you often see when a player switches layers on a long movie but it happens much more often. Irritating. May have been an issue only on my machine.

I boxed mine up & sent it back after a week.
So far I’m very happy with the LG BD570 I replaced it with.

Great Blu ray player!

I can’t say enough good things about this player. Great picture with enhancements which actually work and you can actually see without the hype. Outperforms all blu rays I have owned in the past including my Pioneer Elite 23FD. This unit is relatively quick to load and quite responsive. For a couple of Benjamins, you can’t go wrong.

Sony BDPS1000ES Blu-Ray Player

This player replaces my 1st generation BDPS300, I have to say that this new player is so much better in the video quality. The color is very nice. I don’t have to wait 45 seconds for the player to start, it only takes 6 seconds. The wi-fi on the new player is great. Having a Mac I was unable to download firmware but now it just updates automatically.

It doesn’t have all the new stuff like 3D, but I’m not ready for that till a few more years down the road. Overall this player is the best I’ve seen. Thanks Sony for a wonderful player.

Awesome image!!!

The Sony 1000ES is an excellent Blu Ray player. It has the same Crossbar GUI the PS3 ha and also nearly the same load times. I have about 300 Blu Ray titles and it plays all of them! The Super Bit Mapping really does work. I am seeing an image that rivals my 2K player! Standard DVDs look very good and that’s because the 1000 ES uses the same Marvell chip as the Pioneer 09FD. Sure 700 msrp seems a bit steep but if you want to squeeze out every last drop of picture Q then the 1000 ES is a steal! Oh and I almost forgot to mention the excellent remote that comes with it. That and you get a USB stick to! If you can find this player for somewhat less then MSRP don’t walk, run!!!

Both video and sound are outstanding

Excellent video. The sound quality is a significant improvement over the other lower-priced Sony players. I did not expect to use this player to listen to CD music but I find myself using it very often.

Pleasantly surprised

Nice player, big upgrade from my PS3. It starts up fast in “quick boot” mode. This is the best player you can get if you want top notch PQ and you want to bitstream.

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na’vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he’s supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who’d like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na’vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron’s complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na’vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron’s crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it’s the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves–awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering–that makes Avatar‘s pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron’s dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you’re won over by the movie’s trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended “take that, Michael Bay” final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn’t measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. –Robert Horton

Customer Reviews

Great quality, good features, different than press release,By K. Kauffman

BluRay quality is outstanding. I use HDMI with 1080P/24 active. The 24 is OFF by default. DVD upscaling is very good. AVCHD and DIVX playback is very good. The interface for the networked features is somewhat clunky but usable. NETFLIX, DIVX VOD and Amazon video services work the way they should. YouTube integration works just great. I had previously purchased (and returned) a Sony BDP-N460 because it was unstable, required reboots and YouTube personal playlists were limited to 6 videos per playlist. I’m happy to say that the Panasonic is stable (heavy duty Elmo rotation) and the YouTube playlists are not limited like on the Sony. Wired networking is straight forward. I used a wired drop, so I have not used the wireless connection yet. The one thing I’m disappointed about is that DLNA features are NOT present on this unit and there is no music services included. There is a “coming soon” block on the NET screens, so maybe its coming in the future. I’m very happy with quality of the unit and its output.

A great player got even better — A new benchmark?,By A. M. Kini “Arv51″

I have had this player for about a week now to get familiar with all of its features and capabilities. The picture quality of BD video is simply stunning, even with my Panasonic 720p projector (which is soon to be upgraded to 1080p). I can only imagine how good the picture will be with 1080p projector! Since all my connections are via HDMI, the sound quality is also outstanding. However, unlike the Oppo and few other bluray players, this one is not SACD and DVD-Audio capable (not a big deal with me). I watched Star Trek twice and this regular DVD seemed to have acquired a new life with the terrific upscaling by this player. Colors and the picture look a lot like in movie theatres, thanks to Panasonic’s proprietary video processors developed in collaboration with Hollywood studios. Wi-Fi is not exacly built-in, but with a supplied dongle which is connected to a USB port in the back. USB extention cable is also provided for optimal placement of the dongle and better signal strength. Wi-fi set up was fairly easy, although I wish the instructions in the user’s mannual were a bit more clear. Once connected to the internet, currently active services include Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, You Tube, Picasa, local weather, and Bloomberg stock ticker. Navigating via on-screen menus is a breeze with a decent remote (wish it was back-lit). Movies streamed from Netflix worked flawlessly and the picture quality was surprisingly good! More video and music sites are likely to be added as there is a “Coming Soon” area, which is currently blank. I also don’t understand why DLNA feature is not available on this North American model, but is reported to be available on the European model. Hope DLNA will be made available via future firmware updates. Boot times and disc-loading times are pretty quick, on par with non-bluray players. Thus, one of the long standing negatives of bluray players no longer seems to be an issue.
All in all, a great player. Too bad Panasonic was a late-comer to a player with these feature sets (wi-fi, internet video streaming etc.), but I am glad that they did finally. In fact, by adding these features to their previous flagship model BD80, Panasonic has indeed delivered a potential benchmark in this price/feature class. I would have given it five stars, but am giving it only four because of the lack of DLNA and limited number of currently availabile video/audio sites (compared to other manufacturers). If Panasonic addresses these issues with future firmware updates, this is clearly a five-star player. Panasonic, hope you are listening!

Good Blu-Ray Unit,By T. Whitaker

Bought this to replace a broken PS3 and am very happy with it. Picture quality is great, but it’s the sound I’m most impressed with. Using a non-HDMI reciever, I can still get TrueHD sound using the six channel analogue option. Something I couldn’t get using the PS3′s digital optical option. I’ve watched about 10 flicks and all load times were around a minute. Streaming Netflix wirelessly works great and I can get to it with one button. Also, one button on the unit turns it on, turns on my tv and automaticly selects the correct port. Then, by turning off my tv the player shuts down too. I really like all the one button functions.
