The Full Low-Down on the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Ice Shave,By Edward Wynn III “NobaFett”
I am a big ICEE fan, and after many late night runs to the gas station for an ICEE (and dragging my girlfriend along for the ride), I decided to look into an ice shaver so I could make my own. After reading the reviews here, I decided this was probably the best and most reasonably-priced way to make something close to an ICEE.
ICE-SHAVING ABILITY – Don’t let the “Slushee” setting fool you, you’re not going to make your own ICEE or Slurpee. It doesn’t shave it that fine, but I can’t say I honestly expected it to do so (I was just sorta hoping!). It will basically be as fine as snow, but the liquid you use and the ice won’t come out like an ICEE. The snow cone setting makes a bit chunkier ice. It works fine, especially for a $30 machine, but expect a slush puppie consistency, not “drink through a straw” consistency that will let you make your own daquiris or margaritas. You’ll still enjoy eating your delicious iced creations with a spoon, though!
OPERATION – I agree with the one reviewer that chops up the 1-star reviews to people that didn’t read the manual. The people complaining about jamming and it taking a long time must not have twisted the pin in the middle of the mechanism, which it clearly says to do when locking the shaving chamber in place. If you follow the instructions, the machine doesn’t jam much at all. You only have to stop it to re-distribute the ice, just as you if you were opening a blender or food processor because ingredients were not distributed near the blades. It’s just the nature of these kind of products.
NOISE – Does it make noise? Yes, but you are shaving ice for crissake! The only way to shave ice silently is to take a razor to it and do it by hand (and have fun doing that!). But this machine no louder than a food processor or blender, in my opinion.
CLEANING – a cinch. Everything goes in the dishwasher, but really the only thing you need to even put in the dishwasher is the bowl because that’s where your syrup or liquid flavoring goes. The ice shaving chamber doesn’t really need to be washed after every use because any bits of ice will of course just melt and practically “self-clean” the unit.
MISC. – I wanted to go for the black version of this because it is more aesthetically pleasing, and I doubt there is much difference between the two, but the black one costs a bit more and is harder to find in stores. I didn’t get this on Amazon, I got it at Target, and they only had the white one. An internet search didn’t turn up many stores that carried the black one. Also, the black one was reviewed pretty poorly compared to this one, which doesn’t make much sense. I guess it’s possible the white one is a little different, but I doubt it. Also, the manual has a few pages of recipes, including some for alcoholic frozen drinks. Can’t wait to try those out!
All in all, a good product. I only knocked off a star because I plan to give 5 stars to whatever machine can make my beloved ICEEs.
Very pleased and so are the kids!,By Sheila Moore “Busy Mom”
I wanted a small inexpensive appliance that the kids could use to make slushies and snow cones. Started looking at reviews and came across this little machine. Ordered it based on reviews and the price. First weekend we had it was my son’s birthday and the kids (mostly 12 year olds) lined up to use it. Worked like a charm, easy to use, does exactly what it says and is not overly noisy. I think this will be enjoyed all summer.
Bottom line….If you are looking for an ice shaver, look no further, why spend more when this one works perfectly.
Tip: Instead of buying store bought syrup, heat to boiling 2 cups of sugar and 3/4 cup of water. Let boil for a couple of minutes while stirring and simmer a couple of minutes. Remove from heat and add a pack of kool-aid. Cool and than pour in a squart type bottle for pouring. Makes better syrup than you will purchase in the store and you’ll have so many flavors to pick from. I purchased some inexpensive bottles from Wal-Mart to store the syrup in. Once it has cooled and you have poured into the bottle, store in fridge.
Does an excellent job!,By R. G. Pickering “ritapick”
I got this after my grandson was constantly asking me to buy a Coke Icee at Burger King. I thought I’d save money in the long run. And, indeed, it has helped in that regard. The only problem is that I am never sure exactly how much ice to put in it so it isn’t over iced.
I also use it for my Iced Mocha which I used to get from McDonald’s. Whether or not I make a lot of them, I remember that I CAN make one whenever I am near a McDonald’s, so it saves me money with just the thought.
It is very easy to use. With practice you can gauge how much of the substance and the ice to use. The main thing I would change is the noise. But I suppose it is hard to crush ice silently.
Great for the price,By Mystufff
This is a great little ice shaver. It really does the job and doesn’t take up a lot of room. Compared to the much more expensive shavers, this is definitely a good buy!
Good machine,By Ross W. Virock “rvirock”
I had one of these for many years and it was great. It’s loud, but it’s crushing ice! I never had any issues with it other than the occasional jam (hint: don’t let your room mate try to use it with frozen fruit!).
Ice Shaver,By Barbara A. Wilson
I bought this item for my granddaughter and grandson last summer. We have had many hours of fun making the snow cones so they could share with their friends. It is easy to use and cleans well. Would reccommend this for anyone.
Pleasantly Surprised,By Sweet Tea
After reading some reviews for the Ice Shaver I was hesitant to make the purchase but I am glad we did. Yes, it is noisy but I expected that. What really surprised me was how quickly the machine produced enough shaved iced for 2 – 3 slushies. I was fearful that we would be listening the appliance running for a long while but that was not the case. Also, the quality of the ice after running through the machine is much better than I expected. The machine does a very good job with ice straight out of our icemaker. It is very consistent in the size of the ice shavings and let no larger pieces fall through.
The only drawback is that there is not an on/off switch on this unit. After plugging it in to the electrical outlet you activate the shaving mechanism by locking the lid into place.
Overall this is worth the money and I have no buyer’s remorse!
