Better than I expected.
First, the drawbacks:
The navigation system is somewhat complicated, but pretty intuitive once you get used to it. The buttons are, for lack of a better term, “clacky” they feel pretty stiff, there isn’t much smoothness when you press on them. They work though, for now.
The included video conversion software is totally useless. I mean TOTALLY useless. I tried converting numerous different clips in formats as diverse as AVI (both DivX and XVID), MP4, FLV, MPG, etc. and not a single clip would even begin the conversion process. Pretty huge flaw for the non-tech-savvy user. I managed to get a third-party conversion tool that would convert anything that I threw at it into 320×240 FLVs that play fine on the Ematic. Other formats of video have been troublesome, even at 320×240 resolution, but to be fair I haven’t done extensive testing because once I found that FLVs would play OK that’s the only format that I have used.
The screen is backlit and vibrant. The video looks clean, no framerate issues or lagging. The sound is surprisingly good through the cheap earbuds that come with the player. The TV out function works perfectly. The FM tuner works just as it should, automatically scanning for stereo FM signals and storing them in memory. You can tune the radio manually as well.
The camera is pretty bad under any indoor lighting that’s not super bright, but without a flash that’s to be expected. Video quality shot with the camera is acceptable, though nothing special.
The ebook reader only functions with TXT files, but programs to convert PDFs to TXT do exist. The text viewer is a little funky, it wraps words in an odd way, but it’s nothing you can’t adjust for when you’re reading.
All in all, this is a pretty good media player. It’s no IPod, but it’s also not hundreds of dollars either. It seems to have issues with fully supporting some video formats, but at least on my unit, it plays FLVs flawlessly. The included software is, as was mentioned above, utterly worthless. I would say that the uselessness of the software package is the weakest aspect of this media player, but the file support issues might be a deal-breaker for some.
Overall, for $50, I am quite pleased with this product.
4 GB Egmatic MP3 Player
Excellent MP3 player for my 11 year old. It’s been durable, with no issues with storage or downloads. I was initially worried about the keys or the LCD getting damaged, however, the unit has survived normal wear and tear. It’s not the prettiest gadget in the world, but well suited for a pre-teen.
Love it (thought there are some cons)
I absolutely loved this product the first time i got it, worked beautifully, fast, no trouble at all unfortunately, this brings me to the first problem, I only had it for a week before the screen broke. It’s much too sensitive, the only reason I’ve bought it again is because, I think being smashed into a wall is enough to break any MP3 player. The other problem with it wasn’t necessarily the Mp3 itself but the directions. It seems that it’s translated by a non-English speaker, cause there’s so much broken in English in it. other those, it’s a really good product.
Ematic ideo audio voice, recorder/player
Not bad considering it was 54 bucks. The two Mega pixel camera is so so and has some trouble focusing. The audio player isn’t bad because you can create folders on the device however, you cannot upload whole folders onto the device. Each and every song must be tediously copied to the player in its specific folder. The video conversion software says vista ready , but I couldn’t get it to work with vista 32 or 64 bit! A little bit of a downer, The manual is nearly useless as it lacks detail and language skills. This one would be good if you are a computer whiz, but then you might be really unhappy with it, when compared to other items of a similar nature for higher prices. But definately has bang for the buck!
