With the iPad Camera Connection Kit, it’s incredibly easy to download photos from your digital camera to your iPad so you can view them on the gorgeous iPad display and share them with family and friends. The kit includes two connectors, each with a different interface: The Camera Connector features a USB interface. Just plug it into the dock connector port on your iPad, then attach your digital camera or iPhone using a USB cable (not included). Use the SD Card Reader to import photos directly from your camera’s SD card. Connect it to your iPad, then insert your digital camera’s SD card into the slot. After you make the connection, your iPad automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose which pictures to import, then organizes the selected photos into albums. When you sync iPad to your PC or Mac, the photos on your iPad are added to your computer’s photo library. iPad and the Camera Connection Kit support standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.

Maintains integrity of RAW files and can do Compact Flash without tethering
While I agree on the outrageousness of the opportunistic pricing by marketplace vendors here at the moment, it does NOT mean this product should get a one star rating.

That being said, the connection kit (if you can get ahold of one) works as described. I’ve tested it with Nikon RAW NEF files and it works beautifully. It maintains the original untouched NEF through the camera -> iPad -> iPhoto on Mac path without compromising the RAW image – this was a major concern for me.

A friend has a DSLR that takes Compact Flash and after a great deal of research was able to find a USB card reader that was compatible with the USB connection adapter so she could view/transfer the images without having to tether the camera over USB! The biggest issue was finding a CF card reader that did not draw too much power from the iPad.

My only gripe, and the reason for the deduction of a star is the performance / ease of quickly reviewing images. I find the highest utility of this device is to quickly review a photo on a much larger screen while on location. When you first put the card in, the Photo app generates thumbnails of the images on the card. These are of a fixed size and to view the image any larger you must fully import the image into the Photo library on-device then view it. There is no way to view a larger image directly from the memory card. This makes the process of reviewing a few images amongst many pretty cumbersome.

For fun, I tried hooking up a USB keyboard to the USB adaptor and can confirm it works like reports elsewhere have said. 3rd party apps don’t have access to all of the function keys/control key combinations yet but built in Apple apps do. Maybe in a future OS release?

Perfect
This does just what you need it to do, and it does it well. A gizmo that allows me to almost instantly review my photos (jpeg and RAW!) and videos while in the field is just what the doctor ordered. The fact that I can then EMAIL them via the field (with 3G models) is miraculous! If I had to be picky, I might agree with reviews which are critical of the fact that you cannot enlarge and inspect the previews before deciding whether or not to import. But like I say, that is being pretty picky. The connection kit is killer.

Good accessory, but only because it’s the only option.
The first thing that came to mind with the iPad was “perfect photo device!” so a big selling point of it was the ability to download my photos to the iPad on-location, edit them and upload them – something I usually can’t do while out taking photos or on vacation.

In order to do that, you need the iPad Camera Kit (a currently very-hard-to-find item (I waited 4 weeks to receive mine as all the local stores sold out instantly after receiving shipments).

Right off the bat, I love that they give you 2 adapters (1 for SD cards, 1 for USB). I had no use for the SD adapter as all my cameras are compact flash. I would have happily bought a separate CF card reader if one were available, but no luck on that. If your camera uses something other than SD, you need to “tether” it to the iPad (meaning you plug the USB piece from the camera kit into the iPads dock port, plug your USB cable from your camera into your camera and the other end into the USB piece on the iPad). Not the most convenient method, especially when on-the-go, but its workable.

Plugging in my camera (a Canon 40D), the previews started to appear on the iPad. It took 36 seconds to load the first 35 previews (this is using a short USB cable and a high speed CF card (30MB/Sec). A big downside here is that you cant view the photos larger than a thumbnail without importing them, going to your photo albums, finding the folder it went to and then scrolling to find it. Importing photos (10MP RAW Files) took 6 seconds each. After importing you get the option to “Keep” or “Delete” them from the camera – this is a bit scary as if you’re click-happy on the popup, you can end up deleting the photos from your camera (not a huge deal as theyre on the iPad, but definitely a bit of a scare). You can either select individual photos or choose to import everything from the card.

Imported photos go into a new folder in you Photos app – “All Imported” – it also creates a secondary folder: “Last Import” – I would have really liked a way to create a specific folder for each import rather than lumping it all into 1 folder.

The USB adapter is a bit picky as far as what it will accept, I hear some USB Card Readers will work with it (eliminating the need to tether your camera), but it’s all a matter of trial and error. USB Keyboards work (again, not all – ones with USB ports on them will not work). You can also not import video files if you have something like a Flip HD camera. This was disappointing as the iPad would make a GREAT video playback screen (especially 720p video like the flip) – especially compared to the 1″ screen most of these cameras have.

A big plus to apple for including RAW support on imports (instead of just JPEG).

With the many photo editing apps out there, you can easily take some photos on your camera, import them into the iPad, edit them however you’d like and upload them your photo sharing sites from just about anywhere. For that, it’s worth it. It has all sorts of problems (no CF, requires tethering, slow import, no video, etc..) but it’s the only option you have, and for that I have to recommend it.

Perfect gadget for any geek
I have owned Nikon SLRs and own a Nikon D-SLR and wanted a smaller camera to take on shorter business trips and into places where SLRs camera are not always convenient or allowed. I had seen the videos/promos for this camera and wanted this before it even came out. I ordered via OneCall (one of Amazon’s partners) on the first day it was available and so far I’m impressed. The touch screen works really well, menus are very obvious, picture quality is very acceptable for a point-and-shoot, video quality is very nice, battery life is acceptable (I ordered a spare battery as I have a history of taking many photos) and of course there is the projector, which most of you want to know about. In daylight it works well on a 8×11 size background from 1 to 2 feet away. Anything further away or colored background are not ideal in daylight. In a darker to dark room, you can actually go quite big, much bigger compared to stated, with reasonable quality. Obviously, the closer to the wall, the better the quality, but remember that this is just a very small projector, and it’s built into a camera and not a stand-alone device or intended to be a stand-alone projector. Battery life suffers quickly using the projector and I wish they would not display the “battery low” indicator on the projected image, but that’s how it works.
Drawing on images while projected does not work as smooth as in the promos and the provided stylus is a better tool for this compared to using your fingers.
Have to yet test it as a projector on a PC but assume this to be similar compared to projecting images.

Overall it lived up to my expectations. Nikon has a gem with this one, and after testing the S1000pj at a retail store, it seems like quite an improvement over last year’s model. It’s a good camera and for a geek like me, it’s also a sweet gadget.

Not one of Nikons best products.
I own several Nikon cameras including some very high end ones. I purchased this so I could give an older digital pocket camera to my daughter. She got the best part of the deal. Her 8 MP older Nikon takes better pictures. This camera often over exposes, ESP with flash. Nikon no longer includes a manual. It must be downloaded from the Internet. On 8×10 paper from your printer. Not the easiest way to get solutions and forget conveniently carrying the manual. As I use this camera further the less I think of it. Don’t waste your money.

Don’t bother
Unless you’re in a cave the projector is worthless. For the money there are better cameras out there. I sent it back.

Customer Reviews

Back to Nikon
Coolpix was my very first digital camera in the late 1990′s. I’ve always believed that of the Japanese brands, which includes Canon, Fuji, and Panasonic, the Nikon automatic cameras had the best overall response to consumer needs. This is important for us old 35mm SLR users. When they took the manual ability out of our hands, we had to rely on “auto” technology. Unfortunately, most spontaneous shots are lost while the camera is trying to focus. Nikon has fixed that with this camera… sort of. You still have a very slight delay. However, the auto focus is the fastest I have ever seen in a camera of this type. I was able to catch every action shot of my son’s friends as they used their skateboards. I only wish I had “slo-mo” video (are you listening Nikon?).

Color reproduction: On the whole, the colors are extremely accurate, unless you photograph something like a display (I took pictures of my hi-def television screen and most of the colors were on the cool side). Outside in daylight, I found the yellows spot on (which are usually the most difficult to reproduce). With the fall leaves, all of the colors came back very accurate and bright. Inside in normal light conditions, without the flash, I found the colors slightly warm. You can correct for most light situations with this camera. The night shooting surprised me the most. Nightscenes come alive with the night mode. It’s fun to shoot someone and have the background turn out. It gives the shot a professional look. Overall, I found the colors far more accurate than my previous Canon or Panasonic reproduced.

Clarity: With 12 megapixels to play with, you can zoom to your hearts content. I found it easy to trim and crop with no loss… do I need to repeat that? NO LOSS in picture quality. Usually when you crop and extend the image, the grain comes out. Not with this camera (in most cases, depending how much you need to crop).

Ease of use: As with most cameras in this class, you can basically start shooting right out of the box with very little instruction. This camera is as easy to use as are most automatic cameras. With its complex lens system, this one has about 2-3 cms of width. My wife’s camera is thinner, but she cannot compete with the 10x optical zoom of this camera’s beautiful large lens.

Now for the really cool part…

Shooting in 1080p with such a small camera is an incredible experience, because, let’s face it… this is nearly 35mm quality (and we’re talking motion picture film). You can blow this puppy up and put it on the big screen and see a beautiful image. I had this camera in all kinds of places and making shots I never thought possible years ago when I attended film school. Zooming during a shot is important if you track and zoom at the same time. The auto focus feature also allows the cameraperson to move in on an object and stay in focus. With wide angle, I could walk and shoot and had hardly any “jerk” during playback. Oh, if I’d only had this in film school… WOW! When we played the image back on our 55 inch LED 240hz TV, the clear sharp colorful image just blew us away.

In conclusion, this is an all purpose and very versatile camera that will be perfect to preserve family memories, take along on vacation, or make professional style videos at far less cost. I can’t say enough great things about this camera. Lastly, about the placement of the flash, the manual even suggests how to hold the camera. When you adjust your left hand, you’ll find it easy to take flash pix without interference. Have fun.

S8100 was worth the wait!
OK, I was really wanting the RED Nikon S8100 but apparently only black is available unless you buy it directly from Nikon. I decided to go black because I live in Oregon where there is no sales tax, and Nikon was going to tax me and add $10 to the shipping. Black isn’t all that bad looking anyway and it matches my Cooler Master HAF-X PC case.

I’m upgrading from a Sony DSC-V1. The size of the Nikon is a hair wider, a hair shorter and about half as thick. The DSC-V1 had a po-pup flash in the same area as the S8100 so I was used to holding the camera the correct way already. For those of you that can’t think outside the box, the proper way to hold this camera is to make a gun with your left hand, thumb pointing up, then bend your wrist so the gun is pointing to your right, then place the camera in the gun. RTFM. This tip is printed (and pictured) in the quick start booklet that came with the camera. Once you get used to it, you won’t mind pop-up flashes at all. The only issue you will have is when your dense friends take pictures of you with it and hold the flash down, not knowing any better.

The downgrade from the S8000′s 14 megapixel CCD to the S8100′s 12 megapixel CMOS sensor is no downgrade whatsoever. Megapixels are nearly irrelevant to point and shoot cameras above 12 anyway, and the image quality increase, and low light shooting improvements you get with the CMOS sensor EASILY trump a 2 megapixel increase. I am continuing to be surprised how good my pictures keep turning out, in all light levels.

The 10x optical zoom is great, but what is amazing is how clean the digital zoom is beyond that. I am used to fuzzy or blurry shots when using the digital zoom, but this camera somehow gets around that. The placement of the zoom lever forces you to use your right forefinger instead of your thumb which I’m used to. It felt kind of odd at first, but makes complete logical sense from an ergonomic point of view when you are holding the camera properly. On the opposite side, the macro function floored me. For a point and shoot camera, I never expected a macro this good. It macro shoots better than my Cannon DSLR. I can rest the lens up against the object I’m shooting and the image will still focus good.

The LCD screen on the back is a typical 3″ screen, but a very untypically high quality resolution. It has the highest resolution screen of any point and shoot I could find. You can really see the detail of what you are about to shoot with it. It’s bright and the colors are accurate.

The 1080p video this camera produces is better than I expected. Far better. You can use the zoom feature while rolling AND take stills simultaneously. It also records in stereo sound. Great stuff.

Some people complained that this camera is still a bit too large for their liking. If it was any smaller that it is now, you would not be able to hold it without accidentally pressing a button or something, and it fits in my pocket just fine. Those people must have toothpick fingers or don’t realize that size much smaller than the S8100 really isn’t much of an advantage unless you are some kind of top secret spy or something.

The camera has all the basic features you would want, and several that are kind of neat. Manual on the fly brightness, hue, and vividness adjustments can be handy, the skin softening feature turns your subjects into super models, and the ISO sensitivity range is above average. It has a wind noise reduction option while taking video, and all the features you would use the most are easily and quickly accessible.

I know I’m sounding like a Nikon fanboy now but I’m just so happy with this camera. The only thing I can think of I don’t care for is the rubber stop that plugs the USB port on the bottom of the camera. I prefer a flip door, but this is just my preference.

It comes with surprisingly good full version photo editing software, and even a panoramic stitching program that I’ve yet to try. The full manual is on a CD that comes with it though I prefer a book to look at. The start-up speed (power on to photo ready) is just under 2 seconds. Holy cow batman!

One feature that I haven’t taken advantage of yet but look really useful in action shooting is the high-speed shooting at five full resolution frames at up to 10 framespersecond, and a preshooting cache that records up to two shots before the shutterrelease is fully pressed. This will really make it easy to get the action shot you really want. The other feature that I’m very impressed by is the advanced Night Landscape mode which combines a series of five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise when taking hand held shots. Dark backgrounds turn out very visible without over lighting the subject. Very cool technology idea.

In summery, I feel like the $299 I paid for the Nikon S8100 is very justified. DSLRs should be nervous that these point and shooters will start stealing their market considering the lower price, quality and technology improvements. Nikon has a winner!

Great Still photos & features, poor focusing in video & zoom noise
UPDATE: I have returned the camera today after observing two issues that are dealbreaker for me. We finally had a bright sunny day today and I took some videos to compare against my 3 year old Canon Powershot TX1 that shoots 720p. I also received my mini-HDMI cable so I could watch the video on my 42″ LCD TV directly without post-processing thru Apple TV box.

ISSUE #1: The video keeps going out of focus while I zoom or pan – whether I set center, weighted focus and/or single AF or continuous AF. The recorded video looks really bad. On the other hand my TX1 stays rock steady with the focus.

ISSUE #2: There is a loud zoom motor noise that gets recorded in the clip. I initially thought that continuous AF or Image Stabilization is causing the noise. I put the camera on a tripod and disabled continuous AF and the noise remained and it was clearly there when I operated the zoom.

The still photography feature of the camera is stunning, but video is important for me as well as I want to carry only one camera on my travels.

I love the 3″ LCD on this camera, but the two issues pushed me over the edge.

Original review below:

This is my 1st Nikon. I have always purchased Canon ever since I used a Canon A1 35mm film SLR nearly 30 yrs back. I own a Canon Digital SLR, Canon DV Cam, Canon Powershot TX1. Most of my photography during travel/vacation has been with the TX1 shooting both stills as well as 720p Video which I edit on my Mac and then stream thru my Apple TV.

I have been looking forward to replacing my TX1 with a camera that is:
- compact like TX1
- bigger and better LCD screen (TX1 has very tiny one)
- shoots 1080p with full optical zoom (not handicapped like Canon has done with all their 1080p shooting compact cameras that don’t allow optical zooming during video recording)
- good range of optical zoom
- image stabilized lens
- reasonable number of pixels
- better low light shooting
- shoot moving objects
- separate shutter button and video recording buttons – this is very useful when the subject is not waiting for you to fiddle with the rotary selector as with most cameras (except for TX1 which had this feature).

It is important for me give all this preamble to relate to what my expectations were from this camera.

Gave up on Canon finally, looked into Panasonic ZX7 – didn’t like the reviews and waited patiently for the release of Nikon S8100. Received it today. Have taken some shots and here is my first impression.

1. I am happy with the image quality of the stills
2. Great quality of 1080p video (haven’t tried the 720p mode as yet)
3. Optical zoom is very good (the rate of zooming slows down during video recording)
4. Controls are simple to use
5. Very fast focus response
6. Very fast start time
7. Very good image stabilization
8. Face detection works very well (even on images on TV)
9. Very good build quality (feels robust) – just like my TX1

Only negative: The position of the flash. It is the place where you would normally grip the camera with your left index finger. If the flash wasn’t a pop up type, this could have been avoided.

Overall, I am very happy with the camera. Will move on to try the remaining features in the next few days. Have to get hold of the mini-HDMI cable to test the direct to TV playback of 1080p video.

Customer Reviews

Superior value for money
The camera is $[..]for gosh sakes! It’s an amazing little piece of technology. The 3X optics and 12.2MP CMOS camera are well matched in the optical train to provide a great image for casual photos adequate for most users. It’s the simplest start-up I’ve ever seen. The viewer LCD provides a maximum size to the package. `The manual’ is 7 steps of which 4 include inserting memory, battery, charging battery and turning it on. It’s `point and shoot’ in the extreme.

I work in the domain of optics & imaging design. My wife has a 5 year old Fuji camera of this same genre that I’ve gone to some lengths to compare with Nikon and Canon in this low cost market. Without getting technical … for the old Fuji, there are no user discernable image quality differences. The Fuji optics were superior (i.e. best objective lens light capture and transfer). Take your pick between the 3 on the backend image processing system/PC interface.

My wife has carried the 5 year old Fuji in her purse every day … that’s a technically demanding reliability challenge. Fuji can be relied on to deliver the best value for money in an image capture platform if you’re designing a million dollar platform or this $69 platform. You’re not paying the premium for the huge advertisement budget of Nikon and Canon when you buy Fuji. I think you just get a better camera.

I can’t speak to this unit’s reliability for now. A 3x optical train with autofocus, f-stop, etc mechanisms and micro motors are robust to a point. They will all fail, even the highest dollar product, if exposed to the wrong environment (g-shock, sand, salt spray, thermal shock, etc).

One reviewer mentioned software loading problems. I had absolutely no problems on a Windows 7, 64bit OS.

You can’t go wrong with this device. It’s an excellent camera for you or the kids or the g-kids for Xmas.

Good camera for the price
For someone who just wants a basic point and shoot, this camera will do the job. Its small size makes it convenient to take with you in a pocket or a purse, and the battery life seems pretty long. I charged it in for less than an hour before taking some test shots and it lasted several days (it probably could have lasted longer) before I got around to giving it a full charge.

This camera is user-friendly enough that you could leave it on auto for most of the time and your pictures would still turn out crisp and clear. If you are looking for a little more, the menu is intuitive and easy to navigate. The panoramic mode in particular is a fun feature that’s easy to use and produces some impressive photos, but it doesn’t work like Sony’s Sweep Panorama feature. Instead of sweeping, the camera will prompt you to take three photos, each time displaying the right edge of the previous photo so you can manually align the scene. It’s a little clunky to use, but it still works well.

A far as downsides go, I initially missed having a viewfinder to look through, but I quickly got used to the LCD screen. The flash is powerful, but verges on being too harsh depending on how ‘natural’ you like your lighting.

To upload my photos, I tried to just use the included USB cable but my computer (Mac) would not recognize the camera until I installed the software. My old camera worked fine without any software. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it was a bit of a pain to have to use the software and I’m not sure yet if there’s a way around it.

All in all I’d say the positives far outweigh the negatives. This is a great camera at an affordable price.

Fuji FinePix J40 12 MP Digital Camera – a nice little camera!
Fuji FinePix J40 12 MP Digital Camera

This is a camera made for people who just want to push a button to take a picture. And it works well. The picture quality is very good. Under low light levels, including artificial and mixed light sources, this camera produces very pleasing results (something a lot of cameras have problems with). Go outside and the pictures are great. The zoom lens is imaged stabilized to help give sharp images. It is a 3x zoom lens which is about standard in small point and shoot cameras.

The back of the camera is mostly the LCD viewing screen. Nice and big, the brightness is very good. One thing the camera is missing is an optical viewfinder. Most P&S cameras are not coming with them, but on a very bright day at the beach they do come in handy. There are also a few control buttons here as well as an LED that tells you when the battery is charged.

As for the battery, it’s a removable small rechargable one. The battery recharges in the camera… the charger plugs into the USB port. That’s probably to keep the cost down (and this camera is pretty inexpensive). It’s nice to have a spare battery and be able to charge one while shooting with the other. But to get that feature, you need to move to higher priced cameras. 3rd party stand alone chargers are available on line for about $20.00.

One nice feature is that the camera has 10MB of internal memory. If your memory card fills up, you can still take a few pictures. I was surprised to see that Fuji also includes a 2GB card with the camera (nice touch… most other cameras don’t).

I can’t comment on the software that came with the camera as I don’t use it. Printing small prints at home is too costly compared to having them printed at Walmart, Costco, Shutterfly, etc. Pop you memory card into one of their machines and the prints look really nice.

Easy to use, the only thing you need the manual for is inserting the battery, memory card, and charging instructions. And if you’ve used a digital camera before, you won’t need that. Picture quality is very good. Overall, this is a highly recommended camera.

Customer Reviews

It is classy and it takes great pictures
I will try to share some things I have discovered about this camera.
These are just (my thoughts), I hope they might help a little.
Some things I am compairing to a canon SD1200 and the SD940 .
I do not use the viedo enough to judge that part of the cameras.

*No memory card included with this camera*.

*Some will miss the viewfinder that the SD1200 has.

*Some will miss the HD 720p in the movie mode that the SD940,SD1400 has, The SD1300 has 640×480 at 30fps like the canon SD1200, G11 and S90.
The SD1300 has ( no optical zoom while recording video ) just digital zoom.

The flat button arangement is the same as the SD1200 all but the ( power button ) on top is larger and easier to turn on and off, I like that but be careful it does not come on in your pocket or in your soft camera case.

You get a 2.7inch very clear LCD screen that has a (very good and wide viewing angle in all directions).
A 28mm x 112mm lens, a little better than the 35 x 105 on the SD1200 ( But no view finder on the SD1300 ).

I have not had any trouble using any of the buttons even with my big old hands.

The SD1300 is very easy to use and small enough to carry every place you go for those spontaneous grand kid pictures like the SD 1200 was .
Just a very good basic camera.

I like that the mic for the video is in the front of the camera instead of being on the top (where I put my finger) like the canon SD970 and others, it picks up less finger movement noise being in the front.

*Very fast start up time of just over 1 sec.

I can not tell any difference in shot to shot or flash shot to shot times between the SD1300 and the SD1200,
which is ( 2secs with out the flash ), and 3 to 4secs with the flash on, (( up to 6secs for full flash recharge )).

(Update > A lot of review sites(C-NET) are getting around 2.7 to 3 seconds for the SD1300 between shots with out the flash so I grabed the two cameras and tryed the two again(SD1300 SD1200) with and with out the flash on and I had the same results both ways, I used program mode both times and they would focus and recharge the flash evenly also…)

Shutter lag is good for a canon point and shoot but if you ( pre focus ) that will help even more.
I never tested the continuous shooting( but see my battery test) but canon says it is 0.9 per sec where the sd 1200 is 1.4 shots per sec, if that is important to you.

I did test the battery (NB-6L same battery as SD1200) by using continuous shooting mode ( with the flash on ) and got well over 400 pictures and it was taking ( 1 picture every 2 seconds or less in the continuous mode( flash on ) if that helps you out on the continuous shooting part, and when I turned the flash off it seemed to be very fast coming from a point and shoot world.

In real life I get around 300 or more pictures with some of them using the flash, your still need a second battery for a backup.
A nice backup battery is a (power2000) for canon NB-6L (1200mAh)$19.00. I have used them for years. I really like the battery charger that comes with the camera, it is small and charges quickley.
Some set back the brightness of the LCD a couple of notches to save some battery.

**Update10/30/2010 At the Columbus zoo we shot well over 350 pictures and a lot of them with flash on one charge…

Very good image quality keeping the iso at 200 and below.
I am getting about the same image quality as the SD 1200 which is very good for this small size point and shoot camera.

*As point and shoots get better we often try and compare them to digital SLRs ( speed, noise, ISOs, picture quality ) but because of the point and shoots very small sensors and craming all those mega pixels into them it is just asking to much of the little cameras….Fewer pixels mean there’s more room on the sensor and the individual pixels can be made larger, making the camera better able to record low-noise images in low-light situations.

This is just me, but I like using the program mode and 100iso best and I try not to use the auto mode indoors ((auto works good outdoors in good light though, Lighting is everything, it’s the most important thing I’ve learned so far ( I think?? ). Indoors alot of times auto seems to want to use a very high iso to get low light photos, but this just results in more noise, which makes your pictures look noisy grainy or snowy looking on larger prints, ( it might be ok for a 4×6 or 5×7 prints).
*I use program mode and set the iso to (( 100 )) or 200 iso , for the best image quality with out all noise in the picture.

For some reason canon has done this with all there newer point and shoot cameras the last year or two, (I know it is a bummer) and again this is just me),
You might be happy with the pictures you take in auto mode and people have posted alot of very good pictures on this site using auto mode check them out, I am just saying if you have a problem try this and see if it helps.

With the SD1200 and SD940 I would use program mode and auto iso but when trying to do that with the SD1300 it wants to go to 500iso some times where the SD1200 and SD940 would go to 250iso ,go figure?

Portrait mode does better indoors than auto in keeping the iso down. It uses 200iso and below. not bad…

The more I use this camera the more I find myself useing 100iso in program mode if you have enough good light indoors or outdoors).

*A lot of the review sites blow there pictures way up and look for defects, your likely to only make 5×7 or 8x10s and not see (what they see).
If you are going to make larger prints or need a better (low light camera) and still stay in a point and shoot you could go with a canon SD4000, S90, S95 or the bigger G11, G12, but (much more money I know)! Just keep the iso down at 200 and below and you will do fine…)

The SD1300 seems to have a nice sharp lens even at the telephoto end of the zoom.

Highlights sometimes tend to blow out in very bright sun as with all small cameras(small sensor) this size, you can see this in some of the pictures I posted on this sight for the 1300. But to be fair my G11 does this also.

I do not use I-Contrast in the program mode while shooting, some times in play back I will try it but I am not a big fan of it even then, it will brighten the picture up in dark areas but seems to increase the noise a little, again this is just me alot of people seem to like it and have good luck with it see what you think…
In auto mode you have no controll of I-Contrast and can not turn it off or on…

*I just realy like the colors in the pictures that the canon cameras produce, again thats just me thinking out loud.

No problem with red eye in pictures useing the SD1300.

*The menu screens are large and easy to read.*

The SD1300 has a touch more style, larger LCD and a little more virsatle lens than the SD1200, but the 1200 is also a very good camera.

The SD1300 does have a weak battery door cover like the SD1200.

You do not get a SD card with the camera.
A 4gb card class 4 or class 6 would be a good place to start (if your going to use the movie mode any at all ).
You could get by with a 2gb if not using the video mode much.
A 4gig SD card would be good for 1,231 pictures.

If your new to this digital camera stuff remember to low level format the SD card. Save your pictures first, doing this will also erase the pictures.

I carry my camera in a little phone case that has a belt clip not a loop for fast & easy on and off the belt..
I definitely recommend picking up a small camera case for protection.
I also like the lowepro Apex 20 AW CASE, (Lowepro Napoli 20 case but no room for spare battery on this one).

In the menu mode I set the I S mode to continous and the display overlay to grid lines(the grid lines help me take straighter pictures, you may use it for the 1/3 rule also). I set review to 2seconds, AF-assist beam to on, Review info to off, Lens retract to 0 seconds if this would be of any help to you…

I realy like using vivid color setting like at the zoo on a bright day, it just makes your pictures pop…

**And if you are really bored and have nothing to do #1 Set the camera to program mode, #2 Select “ISO 100″ or even “ISO 80″ for the best image quality, #3 select continous shoot mode(this is like rappid fire mode, don’t forget to pre-focus the first picture. #4 Select “V” for “Vivid” on the colour setting and just shoot continous and just keep the shots you like. You can get to all these setings by pushing the Func Set button…Try this on your outside pictures, Just have fun with it. ( Set it to single shot if you prefer it is up to you ).

I posted some pictures on this site ( see customer images ) for the SD1300, to give you some idea about how your pictures would look (color – sharpness – moving shots – noise in pictures – zooms – modes – cropped pictures), if that would help. (( Please if they are not helpful vote them down and I will delete those, I need to delete a lot of them, please help me out here, Thanks…)

If you have any questions I will try to answer them the best I can, no camera is perfect…well not many. But like John Crim said in his review at $129 the SD1300 is a great bargain…

My favorite point & shoot was a canon SD550, SD850, what was your fav canon SD…

I mostly take pictures of bear in the Smokey Mountians (CADES COVE) and love chaseing the grand kids around taking their pictures. ( And this year the Outter Banks NC ).

The best camera to have…
…is one you’ll have with you. The nice thing about the Canon ELPH series is they easily fit into your pocket, are well built/designed, don’t cost a lot, come with a boatload of features, and take great pictures. The SD1300, the latest in the ELPH line continues in that tradition, adding considerable additional sophistication and sacrificing some useful functionality in the interest of cutting cost.

It is a small camera and carries with it the baggage that comes with the convenience of having to carry so little baggage. (sorry, couldn’t resist) None of the issues raised, given that they comes as part of the convenience trade-off made me consider anything other than the 5-star rating this camera deserves.

- Many of the functions are only accessible through menus, sometimes several levels deep. The good new is the Automatic and scene modes are pretty good (as long as you spend a few minutes reviewing what they really do). This camera is not intended to be used in aperture or shutter priority, let alone full manual.

- The battery life might be shorter than you expect. That’s a trade-off for having a camera that’s small and light; you get a battery that is small and light. One thing you can do is get a spare battery. That is good advice for any camera. Another thing that will help is to keep the display off as much as possible. That means using the monitor as little as possible. The “sad” part is that Canon chose to drop the optical viewfinder in this model. That means a camera that is simpler and less expensive to make but will go through batteries quicker because you must use the display when taking picture.

- The camera response is a bit slow for effectively capturing children and pets. The trick for doing that is to either have a great sense of timing and a shutter that reacts instantly or a reasonably fast ( > 4x / sec ) burst mode. This camera has neither.

Some other suggestions that apply:

- Use the lowest ISO available given your requirement for either aperture or shutter speed. To avoid getting technical, higher ISO always introduces higher noise. At issue is when it becomes noticeable. In newer dSLR cameras you can get over 1000, maybe well over depending on the camera, before the noise becomes noticeable. For this camera keeping it at or below 200 is a good idea.

- Don’t use in-camera sharpening. Digital pictures will almost always benefit from sharpening but you are better off doing it with a photo editing program. Compuer-based algorithms tend to be more sophisticated and you can better judge the results on your monitor as opposed to the camera LCD.

- If you want more vivid colors and have the choice use sRGB instead of Adobe RGB. While you get fewer colors they are distributed over a wider range. They are also render better on computer monitors, many commercial labs, and any other place your pictures are likely to show up.

Finally, I’ve found the Caselogic QPB-1 Compact Digital Camera Case (Black/Gray) is just the right size for this camera. It’s semi-rigid so you get a fair amount of protection but doesn’t add a lot of bulk. It’s made even better by using one of these, Nite Ize SB1-2PK-01 Size-1 S-Biner, Black, 2-Pack, to secure it to a belt loop.

Canon PowerShot SD1300IS
I purchased this camera as a replacement to my Canon PowerShot SD600. The main reason I chose to replace it was for the IS feature. When I purchased to SD600 it was on sale and the IS features on cameras were an expensive option on upgraded models. I have to say the feature performs as expected. Obviously it’s not going to do much if there is a lot of camera shake, but it does the job for what it’s intended to do. Picture quality is excellent. Low light does well despite the reviews I’ve heard. Manual settings do just as well as auto settings. I like the playback button that lets you review pics rather than having to switch the camera into another mode. When taking multiple shots the lag time between pics is minimal. Videos work well with it but there is that pesky no in and out zoom during a video. Sound quality was surprisingly good with video mode as well. It takes outdoor video well with little wind noise. I was a bit cautious about buying a camera with no viewfinder as my last camera had one, but let’s face it, I hardly used it when I had it. Insisting on a camera with a viewfinder also significantly limited my choices for point and shoots. I’m satisfied with no viewfinder and this camera is exactly what I expect in a good point and shoot. I considered the SD1200IS since it was on sale and a little less expensive but I figured for a few extra features, it’s worth the extra $50. Battery life is great! Even under moderate to heavy use it lasted all night and part of the next day. I’d suggest always having another battery pack as a backup though as you never know when you might need it. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a quality point and shoot. For the price I don’t think you can ask for much more in a compact digital camera.

Customer Reviews

Kingston quality, massive storage, what’s not to love?
There are some things to consider before buying this particular card or any other 32gb SDHC card on the market:

1. This is NOT an ideal card for a digital SLR like a D80, D90, Rebel XT, etc… That is because it is a class 4 device. The class of a SDHC cards has to do with how fast they read and write files, not how much storage they have. For a digital SLR, you should purchase a class 6 SDHC card most of the time. Class 6 cards will allow you to take ‘bursts’ of photos and not be limited by the card’s capacity to write them. Also class 4 cards are slower reading data, meaning they will take longer to upload files to your computer. Upload speed is convenient, especially when loading large batches of files.

2. This card has far more storage than most people will need for their digital camera. Unless you like to keep all your photos on a SDHC card and never move them to your computer, or are a high volume photographer, there is very little need for more than about 8gb of storage space for most caeras. The possible exception to this is if you have a professional SLR that shoots files in the 16-20mb range–but if you do, you’ll likely want a class 6 card anyway. If all you intend to use this card for is a digital camera, save yourself a lot of money and buy a PNY 8GB SDHC Card. If you’re worried about running out of space on a vacation, buy a few of them. Otherwise you run the risk of having ‘all your eggs in one basket.’ If one card fails, you lose all your pictures instead of only a portion of them.

This card is fantastic for use in a video camcorder capable of writing to an SDHC card. (Check with the manual first to insure that a class 4 card will be fast enough first). It is also perfect as extra storage for an ultra portable computer or net book like the Asus EEE pc. Another great application would be as added storage to a personal media player or MP3 player equipped with a SDHC slot such as the Cowon D2.

There are other good 32gb SDHC cards on the market, some at cheaper price points than the Kingston card. IMHO, brand matters very little with something like a SDHC card, since they all are made pretty much the same way. None of the brands currently offering them (Transcend, PNY, Kingston) have high fail rates with their other products, so I believe they are all pretty similar. What you decide to buy will depend on whether you trust a particular brand, or who has the lowest price. All of them will work equally well.

Very Big
PREFACE:

I bought this card for extra disk space on my Asus EeePC netbook. I needed as much space as possible to supplement the very small SSD hard drive. I needed something with large capacity and relatively fast file transfer time.

PROS:

It shares the largest SD capacity on the market today with few others (Panasonic, Sandisk, and PNY) and is a quality name that I have had a good history with in the past. Its file transfer time is similar to the SSD drive in my machine so it basically acts as a second SSD for me at less than a quarter of the price!

CONS:

Its not the cheapest 32gb SD card(PNY) nor the fastest(Panasonic) but its good quality with a decent transfer rate.

CONCLUSION:

I’m very happy with its performance and capacity. I would like to see the price come down a bit, but that’s the price of getting electronics of this caliber.

That’s my input, take it or leave it :)

Good for the money, but don’t expect fast speeds.
Excellent for the price. I give it a 4/5 because it performs slower than expected from a C4 SDHC card. I also have a Sandisk EIII 2GB. Although it doesn’t have the class ratings because it’s not SDHC, the Sandisk outperforms the Kingston in both read/write.

My test scenario: Using a Nikon D80 taking 6 shots continuously. The Kingston took considerably longer to write contents from the Nikon D80 buffer.

Heed the Warning Well
It’s a fine product, and it works just fine in products that support the SDHC format. However, be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN your product (be it a digital camera, memory card reader or–in my case–the Palm T|X PDA which for some STRANGE reason doesn’t read it) reads it. Just because your device is new doesn’t necessarily mean that it will recognize SDHC cards (as opposed to the older SD cards).

If your device recognizes SDHC cards, then by all means go forth and thrash. You won’t find a better card for the price.

Great card!
Awesome little card…I bought it for my Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, and it keeps up with my shooting wonderfully…it also gives me plenty of space to go nuts, no worrying about running out of memory!

Works great on my Kindle!
I recently bought a Kindle and wanted the extra storage space for books. The Kindle manual states that is uses SD cards, but didn’t specify if it could use SDHC cards too.

After chatting with a few people in the Kindle Discussion room, I found that others are succesfully using SDHC cards in their Kindle’s, but Amazon Kindle Tech Support told me that they will not support SDHC cards at this time, should they fail.

So being an avid reader, I took the chance and ordered the SanDisk 8GB SDHC card and it works like a champ in the Kindle. I’ve loaded 7 books to it already and can read and write to it without a problem. Be aware though, that only 7.3 GB of space is available on the card for storage when used in the Kindle.

I have had no problems with any of the SanDisk SD, SD Micro, or XD cards I’ve purchased over the years. They are reliable & durable and I will continue to purchase this brand again in the future.

New King of the MegaZoom crowd.
As a serious amateur, I’ve been fortunate enough to own a number of point and shoots including Panasonic, Fuji, several Nikon’s, & a couple of Canon’s. All have had their strong points and I’m not a brand loyalist by any means, but after a couple of weeks, I must say I absolutely love this camera.

My first impressions were ones of pleasant shock. The camera seemed smaller than in the pictures and if it seemed smaller, it seemed doubly more so in terms of weight. Compared to my SLR this thing is an absolute lightweight but very well built and certainly heavier than the smaller ‘in your pocket’ point and shoots. A great balance…although I wouldn’t want to drop it. Some strategically placed silicone on the housing would make this a bit more rugged without much if any impact on cost. Powerup is about as fast as you can bring the camera up to your face – amongst the best of the point and shoots. Controls are easy to use and I like the mini joystick for making on the fly adjustments in manual and scene modes. The menus are fairly well laid out although some items I had to resort to the manual to find their location for the first time.

The iA or Intelligent Auto function gave consistently above par picture quality, although I was always able to tweak it better myself (this could have been as much preference as anything). The AVCHD and HD movies worked absolutely flawless with my Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6E [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]. (NOTE:Make sure you lowlevel format these SDHC cards a COUPLE of times BEFORE first use). I do wish that you could use the normal shutter release instead of the dedicated movie button on the back face when in movie mode. I kept forgetting and tried to stop the movies using the shutter button instead of the record button. Minor nuisance, but will be overcome as I get my brain wrapped around the change in button locations.

The battery worked well past 300 stills and about 35 clips, so I am very pleased with it with the LCD display being used for most of the shots. I purchase another spare battery;Lenmar DLP006 Lithium-ion Digital Camera/Camcorder Battery Equivelent to the Panasonic CGR-S006A Battery, also available here at Amazon, and it appears to be working about as well as the original Panasonic (a great buy). The EVF or Electronic View Finder was very handy, although most of the overlaid information is very hard to distinguish in the small EVF. I CAN’T BELIEVE PANASONIC DIDN’T INCLUDE A RUBBER BOOT FOR THE EVF! Please someone, anyone, make it as an accessory.

The EZ or Extra Zoom function is quite handy. Using this feature, you can shoot at lower resolutions and get more effective zooming power out of the camera…over 30x and it works very well. The LCD screen is clear and crisp, but its performance in high ambient light is about average. Thank goodness for the electronic view finder mentioned above.

Image stabilization is the absolute best amongst my camera collection and is especially noticeable in low light and full zoom. I was pleasantly surprised how well I could take indoor pictures at night with a simple tweak of the exposure. Far better than any of my other point and shoots, although nowhere near my SLR.

The standard 3picture burst mode was fairly standard and unimpressive, but the 10pics per second for speed priority and 6 pics per second in image priority burst mode worked well for catching difficult shots like geese landing on the water and children jumping out of swings, but I still wish the resolution and picture quality was better in these modes. Still, for a point and shoot, it’s ability to catch the fast action is at the top of it’s class.

The lens cap interferes with zoom, but the camera will kindly remind you that you have left it on with a 17,000 volt discharge…just kidding…it will tell you on the LCD screen.

UPDATE: A new megazoom runoff was conducted by Digital Photography Review in June of ’07 and can be seen here: [...] or you can cut to the results here: [...]

To say the FZ35 stacked up well would be an understatement, but as they point out in the above review, you will likely not be disappointed with any of the other fine cameras in the pack. The review, however, will help you to pick one that works best for your needs and preferences. (I’m still super happy and winning contests with my amateur photos).

LIKES: Ease of use, picture quality, zoom and extra zoom, HD movie, lightweight, stop action. BEST Point and Shoot I’ve ever owned ! ! !

DISLIKES: (all minor) No eyepiece boot for EVF, lens cap interferes with zoom, tripod mount interferes with battery/memory door when in use. Only 10 sec. max on the built in timer.

Small but Mighty
I previously purchased the Canon SX20is and used 2 weeks. I found the images just a bit too soft for my taste. Too bad because all other facets of the camera was great. But, to me image quality is everything. If it can’t produce a crisp image, I don’t want it. Perhaps I was spoiled by the excellent SX10is I was switching from.

Desperate for an inexpensive Hi Def video camera for a client project, I decided to give the dual Panasonic FZ35 a try. I had used a Panasonic LX2 for several years and liked it, so I figured why not even though Panasonic is not a manufacturer one would normally think of first for a high quality still camera.

So far, I have been pleasantly surprised!

What I like about the FZ35:

1. The super sharp Leica lens! Having 18x zoom in such a small package.(Sharper than SX20is)
2. Metal tripod mount
3. VERY Reasonable price for all the features included. Seems a bargain to me.
4. The fact you also get very nice HD video in one package is a bonus.
5. Excellent macro mode. If you like macrophotography you’ll like this camera.
6. Relatively simple controls/interface once familiar. (You do have to read the manual)
7. Has 46mm filter threads for add ons.
8. Full time battery indicator.
9. Optional wide angle and telephoto lenses are available if desired.
10 Better than most image stabilization system.
11. Many focus & exposure options.

What I’m not so crazy about:

1. Buttons & switches are quite small and seem rather delicate.
2. Manual as PDF (what a pain). I’ll take mine paper, thank you.
You might as well print it out right away. You’re gonna need it!
3. Smallish Electronic ViewFinder (Not just this one either. They all leave me wanting.)
4. Construction and light weight give a slight feeling of cheapness.
5. Proprietary Panasonic battery.
6. Location of media card in battery compartment.

Is it perfect? Nope. Are any of them? Even the $5,000 ones?

What do I miss most when switching from my NIKON? That bright, super clear viewfinder.
Will it clip highlights? Sure, if you don’t set it up right. They all do. High dynamic range is not usually a feature on most consumer cameras.
Can it take a sharp picture? You Bet! In macro especially, you’ll love the clarity of the image.

Newbies purchasing this … make no mistake, this is a complex little piece of gear. Sure, you can use it on intelligent AUTO if you want, but what a waste. You have to LEARN this camera to get the most out of it. And don’t expect to learn it in a day or even a week. Used properly it will yield beautiful, sharp images. Buy it and shoot, shoot, shoot and you’ll get the hang of it. Why not? The “film” is cheap!

By the way, purchase a Class 6 SD card right away. That way if you want to play with the HD movie function you can. Some cheap SD cards can’t write fast enough for HD video use. If you have a hi def TV you’ll love it.

Beware though, HD video files get HUGE fast! Uploads to YouTube (or anywhere else) can take quite awhile. A 1 minute, 36 sec. clip equals 491 MB and over 4 hrs to upload via DSL.

If you get serious about HD video, or enjoy doing critical focus photography, PLEASE, buy a decent tripod and USE it. Camera movement is the main enemy of sharpness. At the low ISO settings required to get the most out of these small sensors, keeping the camera still is extremely important. Don’t expect stabilization systems to entirely solve “jitter” problems at very low shutter speeds!

High end users take note: In the Custom controls there is an separate adjustment for contrast, saturation, noise reduction and sharpness. YEA ! Somebody is listening.

Nov. 5, 2009. I’ve made nearly 1000 shots with this camera and I’m impressed and still very happy with it.

First impressions of the DMC-FZ35
This is the first of the Panasonic Lumix superzooms that I’ve had an opportunity to use extensively. I regularly use both small point and shoot digital cameras (Canon SD550 and a waterproofed Canon S100) and digital SLRs (Canon 5D and Rebel XTi), but this is definitely a different sort of beast. It’s nearly the size and weight of a DSLR with a lens that is noticeably long in use. It’s sold as straddling the line between the two categories and it initially seems that way. But the more that I think about it, the more I think this camera really fills a different niche. If you’re a serious photographer, a DSLR is really the way to go. You get full control over the images, a large sensor size, a selection of lenses, and filter options. If you’re that person, this is hardly a replacement, and for the compact point and shooter this is a massive camera. Where this camera wins out is for a very simple kit covering wide angle (27mm equivalent for a 35mm camera) and the stunning 18x zoom. You’ll be able to do most everything passably with this camera and with no additional lenses. Maybe this is the camera to put in the glovebox of your car? It’ll always be there, and you can get most any shot with it. No preparation needed. Okay, enough thinking about who wants the camera, how does it work?

Well, it works pretty darned well. The image stabilizer seems to work extremely well, especially at moderate zoom (say 50-150mm equivalent), the battery lasted about 300 shots with some flash use in there, and image quality (subjective, not measured scientifically) was quite good. The camera was a bit slow to react at times though and the face detection works only occasionally. Still, that leaves this a solid camera for what I think is a quite good price. If you’re not going to take advantage of the DSLR capabilities, this is a good functional camera for you. Or an excellent second camera for simplicity.

Pros: 18x zoom with a genuine wide angle, solid construction, good battery life, image stabilization that works, one size might well fit many

Cons: big for a point and shoot, slow acting at times, gimmicky features are, well, gimmicks

Great Camera
I bought this camera after reading all the + reviews on several web sites. This is a very good camera for the price.
Pro’s: price, simple to use, slips right into you shirt pocket or purse, very good pictures, bright LCD (sorry Kodak), uses AA batteries, good video.
Con’s: none! I highly recommend this camera.

Ease of use

simply cool
The camera is very good in quality and small in design. It meets all the requirements I was looking for and does a beutiful job that lives up to its ads. I have always enjoyed Nikon cameras and the zoom fits in perfectly for my needs.
