Customer Reviews

Excellent value, from purchase to operating cost
We had this TV for one month, we bough it here at Amazon.com
As the title for this review indicates, this TV set is an excellent value for the money.

Picture Quality
I will start with the picture quality, we got this set connected to a Dish Network HD satellite receiver and the detail is very good for 1080i picture, and depending on the channel since not all Hi Def channels provide the same quality material, this TV does not disappoints, for example, HD Theater and Discovery Channel, 2 of our favorite channels, provide some of the best HD material in the programing choices, the pictures is quite amazing on this quality broadcasts among others… Now with a Sony Blu Ray player connected via HDMI, playing some reference material such as “The Fifth Element Remastered” Blu Ray, the picture detail is simply as good as it gets… The colors are accurate, bright and natural looking, the blacks are deep and give a great look to the overall picture.
I also appreciate the HDMI jack in the left side of the TV, I use this to hook up my HD camcorder to review our footage prior to editing on my computer, this side HDMI connections makes it easy to connect anything from camcorders to Gaming Consoles etc without having to reach around the back.
The picture adjustments with the remote are very easy to navigate through after getting yourself familiar with it, one quick word here about the remote, the remote has quite a narrow beam, this means that if you are close to the TV (from lets 4 feet or less, as I was while setting it up for the first time) you must aim the remote at the infrared eye which is in the lower left of the TV, this is less of an inconvenience when you watching the TV at recommended distance of around 9 feet, at this distance the beam has a chance to spread and just aiming it in the general direction of the TV does the job. With that said, the Menu is well laid out and intuitive.

The Sound Quality.
This is the weak point of this TV, the default sound settings produce a less than desirable sound from anything you have your set tuned in to, however, if you go into the Audio Settings you can somewhat alleviate this by going in the Equalizer Advanced adjustments, there are 5 adjustment bars there of 120KHZ, 500KHZ, 15KHZ, 5KHZ and 10KHZ, in there what I did was to tune down the 10KHZ to minus 8, the 5KHZ to minus 12 (the lowest setting), the 15KHZ to minus 7 and then maxed up the remaining 2 on the left which are the bass settings, by doing this it diminishes the very high treble sounding small speakers that come with the set and this settings gives an overall fair sound for general TV viewing. Now for movies we have a dedicated 5.1 sound system connected via Optical Cable from the Vizio Optical Sound output jack, this works beautiful :) I had considered subtracting a star from the 5 given because of the sound, but after adjusting the default sound settings the sound is fairly adequate for general viewing so I left all 5 stars in there.

The remote.
As mentioned in the Picture Quality paragraph, the beam is very narrow on the remote, but this is only an issue if you are very close to the TV, if so you will need to aim the remote directly at the infrared eye on the lower left corner of the set, I was sitting very close while doing initial adjustments and that is how I came about to notice this, but once done, the viewing distance from our bed is about 12 feet or so, at this distance the remote operates just fine.
It is a fairy comfortable remote with a good layout of the buttons, it is glossy black, it does not have back light illumination, not a big deal to me, but one thing I wish it had was an “Sleep” button, since it is in our bedroom and when you get that sleepy feeling it would be nice to have easy access button to this feature without entering the menu, which is what you need to do to set up the “Sleep” feature. Again, not a reason to subtract a star from the rating, the remote does its job well, perhaps Vizio will add a dedicated “Sleep” button in future sets.

Power Consumption.
This set shines here again, I connected it to my “Kill-A-Watt” meter and depending on your picture settings, it can variate from 30 Watts to 100 Watts of power consumption, my set with my preferred settings uses 50 Watts of power, I have the backlight set at 45, this is a very bright set so a higher backlight setting is not really needed, but then that is a personal preference. On stand by, this set uses less than 1 watt, this is a highly energy efficient set.

Final words.
We are very happy with our purchase, I consider this some of my best spent entertainment dollars, great deal from Amazon, great TV set, well packaged and saving money also on the electric bill, if you need a TV set on this size range, you should definitively consider this Vizio, you will not be disappointed.

Good Value
I bought this TV in store for 629 which is what it’s going for from Target through Amazon.

I had been in the market last year but ended up passing because I wanted the power savings of an LED backlight but it was a large premium at the time. My other issue is that I don’t have room for anything bigger than a 37″ TV. Frustrated, I gave up.

This was bought as a gift though I had been very close to buying it for myself.

This TV is extremely bright and has an ambient light sensor that does it’s job well. I configured the video to my eye and am very happy with what I am able to get out of it. Note that I am a photographer and am very picky about color tones. This TV is very adjustable and allows you to adjust anything a consumer would want. There are also a variety of useful presets which are actually quite good (ie: movie, football, baseball, gold, vivid).

I did very little adjusting of the sound out of the box. It’s well balanced and can get loud enough. It’s fine, not great. I’d say it’s above average for a TV but nothing compared to a dedicated sound system.

The TV does feature pretty good de-noise video processing. However I’ve had better luck keeping sharpness turned down. 1080i from Comcast isn’t a great signal so I cany fault the TV. 1080p Blurays look stunning so I know the TV is capable of displaying really great video.

Overall I’m very pleased with this TV. Though I didn’t pay for it, I would have no reservations doing so. Moreover if this TV was available in the price range I was looking for I would just get it. I wouldn’t spend time shoppingnfor anything better- this is close to as good as it gets for the price.

Finally went HD!!!!
The Mrs. said I had to wait for my 32 inch Sony tube TV to finally croak before justifying a new TV, and I am so happy it did (I swear I wasn’t kicking the old TV honey!) I did a ton of research and found the Vizio Razor to be the best bet for the $$ (under $600 at the local wholesale warehouse), and I could not be happier. I also looked at the (non-LED) Vizio 37″ LCD TV (E370VA) for about $150 less, but I was really attracted to the LED backlight technology, and considering what all these HD flat screens cost a couple years ago, I figure the expense is worth it. My 32″ Sony was over $800 ten years ago!

Setup was easy, really the hardest thing is understanding the best way to hook up the TV to my Comcast DVR box and other components. Definetely use the digital connectens (HDMI to DVI on my older DVR Cable box), or you wont get the 1080p resolution!!! The on screen menu system and remote are easy to use, and the getting started guide (which I looked at after setting up the TV for giggles) was informative and covered the bases without being too confusing. I was amazed that the remote worked on my cable box with out having to input any codes, but I did have to set it up for my DVD, and that took a little research online at vizio.com.

The picture is so clear even on non-HD channels it is silly, but when you watch HD programs you really can appreciate the technology. The built in speakers are good, but I did connect the system to an old surround sound system I already owned so both the sound and picture are amazing. The system uses so much less power and space than my old TV, I wouldnt be surprised if my electric bill is lower! I just need a crane to get the old beast out of my house.

Customer Reviews

Very Large Screen
I guess with age my eye site is not what is used to be. I already had one of these that I had purchased for much more in the past. When I saw the same item for fairly low price I ordered it. I work with 1920×1200 resolution for software development purposes. When I work on my 17″ laptop with same resolution I was beginning to strain my eyes. So now I have this hooked up to my laptop when I work on it at home, and it is a great monitor. It has both HDMI and VGI connection. The only thing is the speakers are facing the back. To me thats ok as I usually do not use my monitors speakers. I can not say anything negative about his, as I said I been using another of the same monitor for few years now. I would rate this 5 out of 5 stars. Also my Amazon purchase was pleasant, delivery was super fast (delivered next day for free).
I would recommend buying to all.

Great Monitor – 27.5″ of screen real estate
You get a lot of bang for your buck on this one. The color setting needs a little tweaking out of the box, but not much. This monitor is very bright, at least for my eyes so some adjusting was required. There is a lot of screen real estate at 1900×1200. There are VGA, DVI, HDMI plugs + audio.

I’m plugged into VGA and have no lines or distortion in the picture. All lettering is clear. I have not played any games on it yet but can’t see why anything would be a miss.
The base is a little limited but for my desk it works.

Almost too big as you have to move your eyes side to side more than my other monitors. It’s got WOW factor. I would have given it a 5 star if it would have had USB or Memory card reader built in to the monitor.

Pretty nice
Has a good picture and nice dark blacks. I have not used the monitor’s speakers but the picture is great and the price is oh so cheap. Great gaming monitor.

Great value but not legacy friendly
Overall:
I’ve had this set for a few months now. Despite the little criticisms I have, I think this set is an excellent value and the picture is breathtaking with a 1080p source or even 1080i over-the-air.

Picture:
It’s a great display and I have no complaint at all with the picture. It has presets for adjusting the picture and that is a nice feature; I use ‘cinema’ most of the time.

Chassis:
The chassis is a very elegant piano black and looks nice when it is off. This is actually kind of important when you get a TV this large!

Sound:
The speakers are not great, but they are adequate. They are in the back so you (at least I) need to turn them up more than you would for front facing ones.

Inputs / Outputs:
This is where the ‘not legacy friendly’ gripe I have shows up, and costs Panasonic a star. The only audio _output_ is a digital optical output. If you have a stereo with a corresponding digital optical input, you’re all set. However, I’m willing to bet many if not most homes don’t have such an input. This means that you must use the so-so speakers when you use the antenna or an HDMI source that doesn’t have an analog audio output (including perhaps some digital cable boxes). It isn’t too big a deal for me since movie watching is usually via a DVD player and I run its (analog) audio output through my stereo and it sounds great. However, it would have been EASY for Panasonic to have a legacy analog audio output. On the input side, there is no S-video input. I get why they didn’t put this in; S-video is on its way out. However, I have a legacy video camera with S-video output and it would’ve been nice to use it.

I’ve used the SD card input and it is slick. They have a way to let you quickly start a slide show of all the pictures in the camera and even navigate around on the SD card directory. It was nicely done and when you see pictures from an SLR camera brought out to a 42″ display the ‘WOW’ factor is pretty high.

I’ve also used the DB15 connector for the laptop and it worked fine. Be aware, if you want to use your laptop to stream video to this set, you will need a long VGA cable AND a long audio cable. I found a combo cable on Amazon (both the video and the male-male audio cable on one 15′ cable) that worked great.

Remote:
The remote is okay, but the buttons are quite close together so it is actually easy to press the wrong button when you do certain tasks. The one I hit most often is VIERA TOOLS when I meant to hit INPUT. I don’t have anything that supports the VIERA standard (other than the tv) so I never want the VIERA TOOLS, but I do want to change the input fairly often. The two buttons are right on top of one another and the VIERA TOOLS button is like 3x the size of the INPUT button.

One thing I liked about the remote was a special “sub menu” button that lets you quickly get to things like the signal strength meter. I get my HDTV signals off an antenna so I use the meter a good bit and it is nice not to have it buried under sub-menus. Another cute feature on the remote is the favorite button. You can program several favorite channels and get to them via this short cut.

There are R G B Y buttons on the remote but get this: THEY DON’T TWEAK THE PICTURE. They are used for special functions. Uh, how about using F1 F2 F3 F4 for labels and color code those? Otherwise everyone in the world will think these buttons are for picture adjustment.

I really liked the INFO button; it shows you whether you’re looking at 720p or 1080i or whatever and if the show is a digital source the name of the show, etc. The FORMAT button lets you force 4:3 and has a few different 16:9 flavors that are nice to have.

GREAT PANASONIC LCD TV
Great LCD. Far better than the cheaper plasma versions of the same TV. How anyone could give this ONLY 4 stars… is amazing.
Apparently he thought 623 dollars should buy both a 42 inch huge
screen TV with 1080 resolution AND have Bose Speakers with surround sound. Sorry, it doesn’t come with Bose Speakers.
4 star rating was inaccurate… speakers are fine and maybe the guy has a hearing aid who gave it the 4 star rating.
Easily a 5 star item… crystal clear reception, easy to use and a great LCD HDTV. I see almost no difference between this $623 Panasonic and other brands which cost much more money. This should be all you need, unless you are very very fussy… which may be in your cable line or dish… and have nothing to do with your TV anyways. You will like the reception. If money doesn’t make any difference, why not buy 20 models… and throw out the 19 TV sets that don’t please you… (and hope the one you kept doesn’t crap out the next day) Panasonic vs LG is like Mercedes to Yugo. (Yugo was the cheapest car ever made) Ask anyone who works at Walmart how many LG TV sets are returned in a month. You can see PANASONIC TRIED VERY HARD to put QUALITY in this product… IT IS OBVIOUS IN EVERY WAY.

Recommend
I replaced a 6 year old plasma TV that went out. My TV screen faces multiple windows. With the plasma I had to cover the windows with towels during the day to avoid glare. With this TV any glare is barely noticeable and only when the screen is dark. I’m watching it right now (day time) with the windows uncovered.

I live at 5000 feet which caused the plasma to generate a lot of heat. That thing was hot! I could feel the heat radiating from it when I walked by. It did help heat my house in the winter, but probably caused the TV to give up the ghost. This Panasonic generates very little heat and is hardly even warm to the touch.

The only issue is one I discovered after installing this TV and apparently many LCD TV’s have this issue. With the TV powered on my dish network remote would not operate the dish network receiver. After entering the proper code it did operate the TV fine but not the dish network receiver. I had to put the remote withing 2 inches of the dish IR port to get it to function. I had a couple of very frustrating days fighting this thinking it was the dish receiver flaking out. Then I did some research and discovered the interference issue with the LCD TV and various receivers. Different LCD TV’s have different fixes. Some fixes I found are: turn CATS on or off on the TV, turn energy savings on or off or adjust back lighting. On this TV you adjust the back light on the TV. This TV adjust from 1 to 100. I found that adjusting it below 45 the dish remote inconsistently operated the dish receiver. At 42 or lower the dish remote refused to operate the dish receiver at all. I set the TV back light at 78 and the problem was solved. My research showed that this issue is not limited to any one manufacturer and indicates manufactures are aware of the issue. The possible resolutions to this issue should be included in the manual.

I ordered an HDMI cable with this TV, but it was shipped separately and am still waiting on it and am only viewing 480i. Even with an analog signal the picture is much clearer than my old plasma. However, with the analog signal I notice some fuzziness with quick moves on the screen. Most notably when using the dish TV guide. As I move around the guide it turns fuzzy for a fraction of a second, but it immediately clears up and becomes sharp. I suspect this will be resolved once I receive the HDMI cable and boost the resolution to 1080 since it’s a fairly well known fact that an HD TV picture is less than perfect with an analog signal.

I use the dish remote to operate the TV, but I will note that the TV remote buttons are large and well labeled. The exception is the keys labeled R, G, B and Y. They apparently have nothing to do with the RGBY connection. One wonders why they are labeled this way. On page 11 of the manual it notes the colored buttons are used for various functions and refers to pages 14, 18 and 31 for examples. I could find no reference to these buttons on pages 14 or 18. Page 31 simply says that these buttons are available when their purpose is displayed on the screen. I guess I’ll find out what they’re for when I need them. I don’t consider this a negative because it doesn’t concern me. It’s just a little confusing.

So far I am really happy with the TV. This is a good looking TV. The bezel isn’t huge and the speakers are in back which I like. I had it up and running without ever cracking the manual. I look forward to when the HDMI cable arrives. Though I haven’t used all the features I certainly recommend this TV. Just be aware of the IR interference issue and how to resolve it and you will be happy with it.

Customer Reviews

Really like it.
First off: We did not purchase this TV from Amazon, we purchased it at a local retail store, not for any other reason than the price (we paid a few hundred less than the current Amazon price)

My husband and I purchased this back in April, it was either this or the Phillips that they had set right beside it, it was really a hard choice as the Phillips was marked down to just a few hundred dollars, whilst this was just under six fifty. We are so very glad that we went with this model(42LD450). The video quality is quite good, blacks are black, and whites are white, back light is very bright, and video quality is amazing.

We almost took this back however: When we first plugged it in and turned it on, the only picture was a white screen with the Firmware version bouncing around, no menu would come up and it would not acknowledge anything had been connected. Well, we unplugged it again, and turned it back on, and this time, it acknowledged the DVR (input 1) and starting spewing forth video and audio We have had no problems since that.

My only gripe is that we will have to go out and purchase a new unit for our surround system, as the TV only has a Optical Audio Output. And on that note, the built in speakers are not awesome, yes, they are very usable, but like almost all TV speakers, they are not going to satisfy your need for spectacular surround.

This is definitely worth the buy, I really think you will be happy with your purchase. Thank You For Reading.

Not as good as I hoped
I purchased this TV to replace my 3-year old Samsung Series 3 32″ LCD TV in my master bedroom because I wanted a larger size TV now that prices have dropped a good bit (paid over $1,400 for my 32″ a few years ago). I debated between this one and a 40″ Samsung for the same price, both were 60hz models, which is fine since I’m only using this for my DVR. Since I’ve seen a few older LGs before that had decent picture quality, I went with this one for it’s larger size with slighly better specs than the Samsung, although I’ve always preferred Samsung. I figured since this was a newer model than those I’ve seen, with better specs I couldn’t lose…. I was wrong!

I put this one on the wall where my old one was and my first night watching it I was quite disappointed! Although the picture is sharp and vibratant, it’s only that way if you are directly in front of it. The viewing angel is terrible with this set, especially vertically below, which is my problem since I’m using this on a wall in my bedroom and viewing it from the bed, which puts me slighly below the screen (the TV is just above my dresser, maybe 3 feet above the floor). In this position, the screen washes out terribly, much like some of the older laptop displays did. Blacks become gray and colors very washed out. My Samsungs don’t have this problem, neither my old 32″ or my 52″ in the living room. The construction itself is also very flimsy compared to the Samsung models I’ve owned. It’s strange though, that I installed a 42″ LG for a friend that’s over 2 years older than this one and it was much more solid and has a better picture and viewing angle than this one.

I realize this is a lower-end set, and I did not want the best just for the bedroom, but considering that I replaced a 3 year old set with only 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 720p with this one that is supposed to be 100,000:1 and 1080p and yet my old one produced much deeper blacks and vibrant whites and colors, I’m quite dissapointed. Also, another reviewer mentioned that he didn’t notice any backlight coming out of the back, but that’s not my experience. While I’ve seen worse, this one projects a good bit of backlight out through all the vents onto the wall. I guess I can live with it, but why? None of my others had this issue either.

I was considering returning it, but don’t feel like going through the hastle and don’t want to spend a bunch more money to get a higher-end set. I decided to change my wall mount to a tilt mount and angle the TV downward, with it slighly higher on the wall and that helps a good bit because it gets the viewing angel of the TV perfectly alligned with my viewing area, so it looks pretty good now and I can deal with it.

Bottom line, I’m going to be happy with it, but I’m not truly happy! I wouldn’t recommend this one personally and if I had to do it over I probably would have gone with the 40″ Samsung instead, or paid a little more to get a 42″ or 46″ Samsung.

Update on 6/23/2010

After trying to make myself like this TV for 3 days I decided to return it. It is just that bad! Even with the tilt wall mount it still isn’t good. The blacks are still very gray and there is so much bright gray coming thru the LCD panel that it just washes out everything and lights up the lower half of my bedroom brightly, even when there’s no picture displayed. That and all the backlight purring out of the back onto the walls, which is now much more noticeable with the tilt mount.

I went ahead and ordered the 40″ samsung that I probably should have got it the first place and Amazon is making the process easy. They said they will pick up the bad one when they deliver the new one.

Price Performer
This is my first HDTV purchase and am pleased so far. (Read as I don’t know much about this). Setup was simple; the price was right and it has some popular energy-saving features.

The picture was sharp and clear. Multiple preset modes (cinema, game, normal) make setup easy, but there are also custom, fine-tuning adjustments available. It does not appear to have network/internet capability, but I will purchase a Blue-ray DVD player with that feature separately. The unit has an optical audio out so I can use my older receiver for 5.1 sound.

The remote feels cheap, but gets the job done. I imagine one rarely uses the manufacturer’s TV remote so LG (and other makers) probably do not spend much on them. I did not notice any backlight seeping out of case which I understand is a problem on some TVs.

For an entry-level buyer, this was a solid purchase. I paid $658 – I thought that was reasonable for a 1080p set in 42″. I rated it 4 stars on because I do not have much product knowledge (yet).

Nice Picture, Nice Price
I had not heard of the TCL brand before and did a little bit of research to find out that they’re a Chinese company that has manufactured products for domestic sales since the mid-80s. Now they are selling their products here. The concern with any unknown brand would be longevity – will the TV last past the warranty? I can’t comment on that, of course, because I’ve only had this TV for a few days. I can say that it was very easy to set up, and it produces a nice sharp picture. In addition to good HD streaming, it also produces a very nice image on the standard-definition channels. The sound from the speakers is a little flat, so if you care about high-quality sound, I would recommend connecting external speakers. At 40 inches, it’s a nice size for a smaller living area. An attachable stand is included. There is no hardware included for wall mounting. It probably took me 10 minutes from the time I got the TV out of the box to having it up and running with stand attached. You’ll need an HD cable to connect to your cable box or other receiver. Then you set the TV input to the HDMI setting, and you’re watching TV. If you want to set your cable/universal remote to operate this TV, you may have a problem, since TCL is a newer brand and may not be included in your receiver’s list of brand codes.

Overall, this is a very nice TV at a good price. The two-year warranty should take some of the concerns out of purchasing, but I’ll be interested to see how the TV does in the long run.

720p, no LED backlight
The native resolution of this TV is 1366×768, and the backlight is plain old CCFL. The price is nice, but this is not going to be the sharpest looking TV at this size. TCL is calling this 1080p, but it’s going to have to downscale to get it. Other than that deceptive copy, TCL doesn’t try to hide the specs from you, and there’s nothing terribly bad about 720p, but you are definitely not getting a high-end TV here, and that will definitely be noticeable on a larger screen.

Good value and still a lot of features, but I’d be more inclined to grab a 1080p Samsung or Sharp from eBay at a comparable price.

great TV
looked for 1080p for blue-ray and HD, and 40″+, this $499 set seems a steal.
with 2yrs warranty, local service available, no sales tax (online order), free shipping,
values added.

TCL is a famous brand in China, and has years of experience in this industry. reliability should be ok.
this set has very good sound system (8 watts), easy channel switch and set up.

only drawback may be 60hz motion comp. which looks blurry for moving parts. if you watch a lot sports, this
may be a problem.

Makes renting movies obsolete and archaic
With this device, watching my favorite movies from netflix has never been easier and more convenient! Installation of this adapter to my Samsung TV was pretty straight forward-within minutes after the intitial I was simply asked to provide my network username and SSID and voila I had access to a myriad of films from Netflix! And I have no regrets about this investment-streaming quality has been consistently excellent and I have access to any movie I want at my finger tips. Its time for everybody to reconsider driving out to the videostore or waiting for your selected films you had to choose in advance to arrive in the mail-this adapter will surely improve the quality of yours and your family’s life!

Simple, easy fantastic!!
This doesn’t get any simpler it gets. Unpack the LinkStick adapter, which includes a right-angle adapter. Plug it in to the back of the Samsung Bluray player or TV. Turn it on, go to the menu. Voila. It sees the adapter and connects to your home network. Select the correct encryption and password for your access point. It took me just under 2 minutes and the downloads started.

The video streams in 1080P. Allowed me to run my netflix through it. Could not be happier

Samsung Wireless Linkstick
I am extremely pleased with the wireless Linkstick. Delivery was ahead of schedule which accelerated joining NetFlix. Configuration was a breeze and by the book. One needs to know a tad about your router but I am an ex computer integrator so no problems there. Hookup was first shot and connection is to a Dlink 4 port wire & wireless N router one floor below the TV itself. Reception is great with rarely a disconnect and that’s a Comcast issue. Hookup is without security features but network is extremely secure and no neighbors are computer savy. If you get one for your Samsung TV you will be very pleased providing you supply the proper bandwidth.

Customer Reviews

Excellent TV, but beware of the early runs.
The dirty little secret when buying consumer electronics is to not buy them when they first come out, because there are bound to be bugs and defects among the first units manufactured. The manufacture is bound to discover these problems, make the necessary correction(s), and the subsequent lots should not have the same issues. This Vizio model is no exception.

I too have had the audio problem, where the audio distorts after a set amount of time. When I went to exchange it, I made sure the replacement was from a different lot than the first, that way I am bound to get a unit that shouldn’t have the same problems as what I had before. My new unit works perfectly. For reference my first unit was made on 11/09 and my new unit was made 02/10.

Vizio has also made several firmware updates between the two sets I tried out. The first TV had version 2.06 and the second 2.13. I have no idea what improvements were made, but it could relate to the audio problem.

What I like about this TV is that since it has a glass panel, the image resembles what a HD CRT would produce. It really smooths out the picture and gives a better image quality that a matte finished LCD panel can’t deliver. A typical LCD TV can produce a sharp picture, but at the same time it looks a little hazy to me. You certainly can’t get a glossy panel for a TV of that size anywhere that I know of. If you like the look that a CRT TV or a plasma gives you will probably like this TV. I am also surprised that Vizio was able to deliver a LED TV at this price point.

I also really like the styling of this TV. It has the appearance of a high-end TV, something like what Bang & Olafson would produce. An the fancy touch panel controls are a nice touch. I would like to purchase a 27″ or 32″ of this same style of set, but unfortunately Vizio only makes this style in in 19″ & 23″.

The sound, if you get a properly working unit, is quite good. It looks to me Vizio put a smaller version of their HD sound bar into this set, because the SRS Surround technology really expands the sound coming from the TV. I didn’t find the sound to be “tinny” at all. As others had reported the sound quickly goes from silent to loud.

The remote control only has one IR emitter on it, so if you are fairly close to the TV you need to point it toward the IR receiver to work properly. If you stand back a few feet, then you should have less problems. You best bet is to use a universal remote control (like the one provided by your satellite of cable provider), because many of them have at least 2 IR emitters giving you a wider range for transmission.

This TV also features a light sensor that can automatically adjust the picture in relation to the light in the room. Be aware you can’t use this feature at the same time as the 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio feature. For me the dynamic contrast ratio feature works better for me.

For some reason Vizio doesn’t advertise the fact that you have the ability to pause live TV (like a DVR), if you plug in a flash drive on the back of the TV. This TV also can play a play a slide-show of pictures on a flash drive.

For those that already own this TV and are unhappy with it, I would encourage you to exchange it at the store of purchase or have Vizio replace it. No one should have to live with the defect(s) if Vizio corrected it in later runs.

**UPDATE: I have seen that several other retail outlets are no longer carry this product, it appears it is being replaced by a more conventional design, that lacks the glossy screen. If you are interested in this product, be sure to get it as soon as soon as possible.

Vizio vs. Sony vs. Samsung
Although I am not a videophile or audiophile I’d like to comment on this product.

To be honest, I purchased at the Cost** Warehouse store because of a $50 savings over Amazon, a 90 day no-questions-asked return policy and an extra year of manufacturer warranty included in the price. Since this is a new technology in this size set and sales usually come up on TV’s around the Superbowl, it made sense to me to have the option of return if the price drops and to be protected by an additional year of warranty.

So far, I’m glad I have a 90 day return option because I just might have to take advantage of it regardless of any price movement. Unless there is something wrong with the set or we can’t figure out what we are doing, the poor quality of the sound might necessitate it’s return.

Having prior experience with a 19″ Sony and a couple of 26″ Samsung LCD sets I can report that the sound on this set is extremely poor compared to the others. So far, no matter what we do to adjust the sound it just does not perform. Using the SRS surround setting is just horrible. This set replaced an older Sony 720p LCD that had a simulated surround setting and it sounded fine. The other options you have include several pre-sets that do not allow for equalization adjustments if you choose them or the setting called ‘flat’ which does allow for setting the bass and treble. So as of this writing the best sound we can get from this set is to use the ‘flat’ setting and then turn the bass up to 100% and the treble at 60%. Using this setting the TV still sounds very ‘tinny’, like you are listening to a 2″ speaker! If you turn down the treble any more it begins to sound muddy, and if you compensate by reducing the bass you get more tinny.

Aside from the sound (which may prove to be a deal breaker), the picture looks very good, on a par with my other Samsung sets. I think the size is very nice, the old Sony was 19″ and this makes a nice difference giving you more screen area than the 20 or 22 inch alternatives. The form factor is very sleek, the remote is poor (but we use a combo cable remote anyway). We do not connect directly to cable so I can’t comment on ‘channel lag’ as has been reported but can tell you it takes an annoyingly long time to start up, making you watch a ‘vizio’ splash screen, then a blue screen, then finally your picture.

If you have a very bright room, be aware that there is the potential for a lot of glare from the reflective glass surface of this set and that may be a deal breaker for you because there is a lot of reflection from some angles. If you can train yourself to look through it you might be fine.

So in summary, we are happy with the picture and performance of the set overall, but if we can’t find a solution to the sound problem the set just may go back. I will update this review if there is any news to report.

UPDATE June 21, 2010:

It’s been about 5 months since we hooked up a set of speakers Altec Lansing BXR1221 2.1 Speaker System (Black)to this set and the sound problems are mostly gone. I say mostly because once in a while the sound is garbled and we need to shut off the TV and turn it back on again for the problem to clear. Changing channels or inputs does not work, it must be powered down.

The only other issue is the fact that the remote must be pointed at the sweet spot and at the right angle otherwise it does not respond.

So if you can live with the fact that you might need a set of speakers to overcome the sound problems and the slight aggravation of the remote responsiveness then go for it because the picture and form factor of the set are outstanding.

Truly great TV
I bought this TV because my 20″ LG that I use in my home office was going out. I figured that if I was going to buy a new TV I might as well get the latest technology. I picked this one because of Vizio’s reputation. When I hooked it up I was truly amazed at the picture quality. I own 4 HDTVs and have replace all of them at least once, so I have owned at different times 1 projection LCD, 1 Plasma, and 6 CCFL backlight LCD TVs. The picture on this TV is truly great. The standard definition channels look almost as good as the HD channels did on any other HD TV I have owned and the high definition looks so real one would think they were looking out a window. I remember how impressed I was with my first HD TV, well this TV made an equal impression on me over my prior HD TVs.

The only annoyance is the fact that the volume bar does not go away when the sound is muted. I remains until you un-mute the TV. This annoys me, but is livable considering everything else.

The biggest advantages to LED LCD over CCFL LCD are the power consumption, the expected life of the backlight, and the picture quality. This TV is advertised as only drawing 30W but my UPS tells me it only draws 26W. The weakest link to a CCFL LCD TV is the backlight. It is what goes first most of the time, but LEDs last virtually forever so I will have to see what the next weakest link will be that will cause me to have to replace this TV. I expect this TV to last for at least five years before needing replacement, but time will only tell.
